Perhaps it would be better for you to drive and have somebody who knows their onions as a passenger to listen, my indie mot garage mechanic has done this for me, fwiw a mechanic, even on trade plates cannot drive an unroadworthy vehicle on the road, most insurances dont allow for testing on a public road,
This garage does seem to have been picky and a bit dishonest to not advise at the booking stage that they would not take it out if it was presented in an unroadworthy condition but at the end of the day its the mechanic's license at stake,
Atb and Good luck

Sounds like they did eff all until you announced you were going to pick it up.

You need old experienced mechanics for a Range Rover Classic. The young ones don't know what to do unless they can plug a computer in and have probably never even seen a carb in real life.

Unfortunately I know no-one in the North I'd trust. There are a couple of places down here I trust but it'd be a hell of a hike and there's no public transport to talk of. That's one of the reasons I am on here asking for advice so I can fix it all myself.

.. so who would you recommend.. I was looking forward to using my classic, step by step approach to making it just as i want it.. but this experience was so disappointing - I felt like right mug too. I haven't been ripped off like that, car wise, in a very long time. To be fair when I arrived to this cowboy in Burley in Wharfedale I thought what a ****hole am I doing the right thing. I should have trusted my intuition. If you have a suggestion then it might be worth my time to travel.

My neighbour recommends Alan Heybourne but I cannot recall what his business is called. Think he's over the Bucks border in Oxfordshire.
