Hi everyone,
I'm buying my first ever 4x4 and chose the Range Rover. The Discovery comes second choice but the Range Rover Classic that's been sitting derelict at my local friendly garage came up for grabs.

Steve the proprietor tells me that for the MoT today, as long as the body doesn't move appreciably from the chassis when you rock the lot, it'd pass the MoT. The crucial areas for this are the body mounts, but the mounting arrangement is so sturdy you could get away with it with one set of rotten mounts. I'll post pictures of the rot here later. I plan to weld repair it myself, having cut my teeth welding up 1980s Jaguars which rot similarly.

Yes the last MoT was 2008 and it failed on rust. Steve claims that the MoT rules have been updated since and they allow a wider margin for rust as long as the bodywork doesn't move much relative to the chassis.

Never mind all that MoT bollox. I plan to repair the rust and do her up to scratch.

steve sounds a bit of a tool to me, any rust holes within a certain distance of any body mounts will fail an MOT, something like 8 inches??
 
Here's my first (and likely my only) 4x4. I've finally bought her from Steve of Allen & Elliots in Slimbridge, Glos. Steve was sad to see her go but also knows that he'll never get round to fixing her up.

"This is a real classic you know! It's one of the first diesels that came out." Steve reminded me time and time again. I just nodded.

"You won't miss her - I'll bring her back here for you to repair and maintain her." I said. I'm a loyal customer to his garage.

The main areas of welding repairs are shown in the pictures. I've not yet got pictures of the rotten rear cross member but I shall see how I'll tackle these areas.
