Hi,

I am currently looking to put a value on a carmichael commando 3.5l V8 that my company has owened for many years.

As you can see from the pictures, it is in good condition and solid (been dry stored all its life!)........
It does not currently run (batteries flat, cranks but does not fire fire pump also needs a new impeller), but has been ran in 2006...but retired from service due to us not needing an onsite fire crew any more.

Could someone out there please give me an estimation of how much the vehicle is worth........If anyone is near coventry and fancies a closer look then they are more than welcome (although the vehicle is not for sale just yet!)

As a newbie I'm sorry to be negative in my (first) post but I guess the answer is not much. If I were looking to buy a TACR I'd be put off by the fact that it's an early model with 2 doors & a 'carb' engine, as opposed to the later TACR2 which had 4 doors & EFI. Also it looks like it needs a fair bit of work to bring it up to show condition, but might be of interest to someone with some land who just wants a play-thing. Try it on flea-bay & see what interest there is?

Its only a 6x4..........i guess thats not as good?

Hello Luke,
Just came across your Commando and very pleased I did! I believed this particular vehicle to be scrapped!!
I'm glad it's still around.....
I run a small group of enthusiasts and would like to ask if your company would seriously consider 'donating' the vehicle to our preservation group?
The reason I ask is that we have just been 'given', on permanent loan, a Commando from the Falklands Isle Fire & Rescue service. It has to be shipped back to the UK and we await it's return to show/display it.
Yours is of particular interest as it is originally built for airport/airfield use with a roof monitor.
As I said, I believed this vehicle to have been scrapped and I was really surprised it had not...
You company would retain ownership if required or we could maybe pay a 'token' fee for it? No extra cost would be incurred by your company and she would be well looked after.
I hope you would pass this on to your boss even if there is no interest. I would be glad to view the vehicle also.

Hello Luke 1. Like Rangemaster I am a member of the 6 Appeal Wheel Group and was delighted to see your Commando pictures. As there seems to be some confusion over this vehicle please allow me to add my sixpennyworth. Firstly what you have is a Commando NOT a TACR2 and all Commandos were 2 door. (Early TACR2s were 2 doors converted to 4 door later models used the 4 door Range Rover body). So although it shares a common chassis with a TACR it is a completely different animal.
Yours is one of a pair, its sister VRG 162T was last spotted for sale in the Coventry area a few years ago.
As to value, if the pump were working and the everything else, engine, transmission body etc. straight you could be looking at up to 4.5k but with the present squeeze on cash like everything else its only worth what someone will pay for it.
Whatever you do don't give it away to some twit who wants to convert it into an off-roader!!
Would very much like to come and view anyway, If Rangemaster is going to go and see it I'll try and link up with him so you don't get too much time taken up.

Yes it is worth something, I agree. The group I run is for preservation together with the purpose of showing these vehicles to many who have never seen one and in an operating state as they should be.
Some have 'butchered' some very nice examples to make pick ups, off road hacks and a general mess of a very useful and fun to have vehicle. We, as a group, want to save at least one of each type built.
You see, when you have a group of people who contribute so much time and effort - for free (me included)- then I think we have a pretty good cause to ask for a 'donated' vehicle to save it from someone like you who clearly cannot understand what we are about.
Thanks to the stirling efforts of two of our members we are having a far more valuable and rare appliance 'given' to us to take care of..and it's being shipped back at no cost to us as we don't have these funds available.

As a matter of interest, I own a TACR2a which I have had for 10 years and am still inspired by it !

i know wot your about, preservation and all that. I on the other hand see no reason to prserve em and would use these end of life vehicles for enjoyment.Very like you, and also like you id be well for blagging one FOC.

Oh Dear. It seems as if Goonarmy and Rangemaster are having a bit of a tiff. I thought this site was for 'enthusiasts' who only wanted to promote Land Rover products, not argue over each others moral principles. As a fellow member of the Six Appeal Wheel Group I would like to invite Goonarmy to attend one of our gatherings. There he would meet a group of genuine enthusiasts who have spent thousands of pounds of their own money (including me) in preserving these rare vehicles for no personal profit. I am sorry if you think our member Rangemaster is trying to 'blag' the vehicle, but that just sounds to me like you may be judging everybody by your own standards. I don't know you and know nothing about your hobbies or interests, but please don't run others down just for not sharing your own beliefs - that way lies Cristalnacht all over again.
Can we at least agree that rare Land/Range Rovers are worth saving even if we can't agree on which ones are best.
Come on chaps, shake hands and make up, don't turn this site into a slanging arena.

I agree with the goon though. These vehicles were made to be used, not sat in some garage or showroom to be exhibited. If someone wants to keep one/restore one or whatever, why should someone have to "donate" it? If you're serious about it, then bloody well buy it.
