Honestly it’s ridiculous the whole situation was completely stupid, i can laugh now but at the time:mad: also everyone now refers to the car as ‘the obstruction’ rather than the range....

Yeah it didn’t need the strap I just would have felt safer using it, as when your laying down with the gearbox balancing above your head unrestrained, you feel like your one wrong move away from disaster! Still haven’t done anything on the gearbox yet :oops: but will be making a start on it tomorrow!! :D
Taking your time is the key and especially hard on your own as the bloody thing weighs a tonne.
With Phil on your team you are in safe hands as you do not want to be taking the thing out again when you end up with 1 forward and 5 reverse gears:)
 
Hi guys I’m am still here!! The box strip down is coming on slowly, going to carry on with it later this afternoon, I’m giving up on car ownership as now every vehicle we own has broke down this last week! My van had the starter motor go and then the brake line burst:eek:, my soarers exhaust dropped off and then I discovered they are obsolete... and my nearest exhaust shop want £1050 to make me an exhaust for it (considering welding one up myself out of 409ss) oh and my wife’s car randomly the seat belts no longer retract!! And the boot won’t stay shut as it has an electric catch/clamp so she is driving round with the boot roped shut and saggy seatbelts.... i haven’t decided if I’m cursed or if the house is... maybe both....

This is as far as I got as of yet, the filter was stamped 2003 so that was original so I guess the fluid was too, so for 120000 miles I guess it wasn’t too bad but was very thick sticky and deep brown on the plus side the magnets didn’t have much crud on them at all so the box is probably in good shape, I struggled the most with getting the transfer box off as my bloody socket wrench wouldn’t fit between the casing and the rubber mounting bracket casing so ended up having to chisel the bolt to loosen it then use the socket and plyers! After that everything went smoothly

Is it the transfer box bolt shown in the phot? They are like a torx head bolt, if so try using the ring end of a 10 mm ring spanner, i think they are all the bi hex type and then linking a bigger spanner together with it to get some leverage. When i removed the transfer box with the transmission still in the vehicle i found that i couldn't get a socket on a few of the bolts to torque them up so i just did them up FT.

Oh yes that’s the one!! Took bloody ages to get it out all the others weren’t too tight but typically the hardest one to get at was solid! Had to really go at it with the chisel to loosen it, didn’t think about trying a spanner as didn’t want to risk stripping the head off it! But will definitely use that to torque it back up.... I never bother with torque settings (naughty I know) I just go off the old days, I have a Pittman’s guide to rebuild my old Ariel motorbike (never got round to doing it yet!) and in that the official torque settings are..... hand tight, nipped up, and dead tight!!! Love it! That’s how it do everything now!! Probably why I snapped one of the wheel bolts on my soarer last time I did the breaks..... if anyone was watching me then.... I punched the floor as the bolt snapped and head butted the wheel arch.... I was not best pleased!! Genuinely thought I had broke my fingers!

Nah I don’t think a horse would be a good idea.... me in jodhpurs...... not happening, plus horses break down too and you can’t fix them with a 10mm spanner and a blow torch, I need something with zero servicable parts..... like a bus pass:oops:

Here’s wher I’m at so far... finally broke the box down enough to easily carry it inside so it’s now safely tucked up in my workroom... going to hopefully get it stripped down completely tonight ready to take to Phil for a good clean and use Phils tool to compress the clutch packs, just got to get a big screw to remove the two rubber guides! Nothing I have is big enough.... (story of my life:D)
 
The insides of manual box`s are scary enough, but these are witch craft, that's some complicated casting and internals :eek:

Decided against the bus pass and bought a 1994 p38 instead.... the guy was scrapping it!! So for the grand some of £90 it is now mine.... it’s mot until April 151k and is an absolute shed!! :D But I think it’s great! The back brakes are fooked But sorted that off fleabay for under £50 it uses more oil than fuel (leaks from everywhere) but it will keep me on the road until the l322 is up and running again plus it has a tow bar which the l332 doesn’t and it only cost an extra £8.24 a month to add to my RR policy! I was getting sick of having my wife take me everywhere!!

I know!!! Honestly I wouldn’t take it on with having Phil on side... I may look like I know what I’m doing but really I’m just unscrewing stuff and pulling bits until they come off! Phil is a legend he could name every part number for each tiny part of the gearbox and strip one down blindfolded I reckon

It really is like something from an alien ship, I often wonder how someone designed it.... like who sat there with a blank piece of paper and thought that thing up!!! Seriously! Auto boxes came from some sort of higher power I’m sure of it!
