Hi People,

Just wondered what position the gear shift lever has to be in when engaging four wheel drive low/high range and diff lock in a auto box Disco 300TDi, also I am going to look at a possible Land Rover on Sunday, how can I tell that the range selector and diff lock works without going off road?

Many thanks Callum

Hello Callum, the reason why you are getting loads of ****-taking remarks is that if you had used the search function you would have found loads of info.

However, I've just had me tea and feel mellow so I'll give you a quick run down:

All Discoverys are permanent, not switchable, 4 wheel drive.

For normal on-road driving - high ratio and non difflock

For onroad driving in snow - high ratio and difflock

ditto in hilly areas - low ratio and difflock

Offroad but firm ground - low ratio and non difflock

Offroad and slippy - - low ratio and difflock

As you can see the selection depends on conditions. To know more read the handbook when you've bought one.

Re testing the difflock, if you are in a snowy area, trying driving with and without difflock and you'll soon feel the difference. If you can get it into difflock that is???????????

Hope that helps, don't mind the others they not been fed for days :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

When selecting through the hi/lo range the autobox shifter should be in neutral whilst stationary or travelling (easier) at sub 5mph. So , from 'D' go to 'N' , then shift the range lever to the desired position with a slight pause at its neutral position and then re-select a 'drive' position again.
