Just installed my old radio/cassette (of the 2001, 110 td5 that i crashed:() into my series 3. got power and sound for a few min before the fm digits and the sound start to go on and of and on and of and on and of and on and of ...etc...

Now all i can think of is that it got something to do with a code (which i don't have since the insurance comp got all the docs) checked grounding and all other related wiring (is as solid as the chassis, i think) and am now lost and irritated.... don't just want to buy a new one since this one got the landy logo on it and is one of the few surviving bits of me old beasty (maybe sad but true)...

Any idea on how to solve this???

Doesn't sound like a code issue, you sure it's not power related, maybe pulsing off the alternator??

Would the alternator not do that from the start? as i got a few min (various time lengths) of good working order each time I start it up, then the on and of (green back light on radio still working and not pulsing) then stops in full... needs a few min and then back at the start again.

Sounds like the internal amp is getting hot and cutting out to cool down (maybe) properly check your speakers and wiring, try disconnecting one at a time.

Cheers, but only got 1 speaker connected (as i don't know where to build in/on the rest). But will try a diff radio to see if that helps.

is it fine when your run it off the battery?

if thats the cse and its cutting out when running off alternator, then perhaps it just doesn't like the supply from the alternator.

You could put a large capacitor across the radio/cassette input supply, to smooth out any supply ripple that could cause it to take a hissy fit.

id be tempted to put the radio on a 7.5 amp fuse on the ignition live terminal maybee its drawing too much power from the alternator and heating itself up fast

both ideas I will go and check now, cheers :)

Finally got round to do it:
-direct from bat (via floating fuse) to back of radio and worked for half an hour. (so was wired in through alternator before, cheers Tronicus)
Then smoke came from behind the radio as the antenna was slowly melting away... so will now try the ignition option....
