Changed my radiator this evening. The nut that was causing all the issues had been cross threaded. Had to hacksaw it off and then unscrew using mole grips and a spanner. The brass oil cooler pipe was fecked as suspected.

The new Nissen rad looks pretty good. I'm pleasantly surprised. Think I'll coat the coupling liberally with grease or maybe copper-grease and hope it can keep the salt off, assuming it can take the heat.

If anyone out there can refurb the oil cooler pipe then they're welcome to the old radiator. It has no sludge in it whatsoever and seems in good nick apart from the brass pipe that I broke.

glad you got it all sorted, a crossed thread can be a real nightmare to tighten and undo no wonder you had grief and it snapped in the rad.

Cheers. I'm glad too. Just the continuing air conditioning belt saga to resolve and she'll be back on the road!

Just thought, I think only the manual uses the brass oil cooler pipe at the bottom of the rad? So, if you block the holes up there's a perfectly good rad going for an automatic.

yes diesel auto has oil cooler rad behind passenger fog light blank, so rad may be ok for some one else. good luck with the belts didn't know there were different sizes, you learn some thing new every day if not its a bad day.

4PK830FS went on with a little help from Sammy Screwdriver.

I may have overtightened it a little though. Runs quiet as a mouse but I get a rubbing squeal each time the air-con compressor clutch kicks in. Not sure whether to leave and hope it loosens up a bit or pull it all apart again. On the upside I did the gearbox oil and the engine oil change while I was about it so hopefully she'll be OK for a few weeks.

(so hopefully she`ll be ok for few weeks) that's faith in the car, what are these motors doing to us they turn us into nervous jabbering wrecks as we wait for next thing to be throw at us, glad it`s all fixed now.

You've sold the Rangie?

Yes. Didn't need the massive tow rating any more, but did still want 4x4 for wet slipway use with a 17ft boat. Got a Hyundai Santa Fe and was more than pleased. But wrote it off :) Now got a Kia Sportage. I preferred the Santa Fe in hindsight, but needs must. Still, they are both the same parent company, both Korean and both extremely reliable leaving me with both time AND money at the weekends :)

However, that said, I learnt a hell of a lot working on the P38
