Could sombod please fill me in on this Q plate malarky.

Let me fill you in :

I have seen for sale ( motor trader) a 2002 110 td5 on a Q plate. looks nice loads of options at a fair price. But ! On the log book it says it's a 1991 with a 2286 cc engine, and there are only 9 digits in the chassis n°.

I know it sounds proper dodgy but the guy assures me that it's legit and chassis n° has police approval- Please explain how this could be possible as me a bit thick and have been living in France for over 20 years !!

Possibly Ex-ministry, civvy registered in 2002 on a 'Q' plate, and then had a Td5 engine fitted.
 
Only seen photos of it but to me it's a TD5 110, front holes under grill,air intake on the left, rear disc brakes, interior etc ....

Also worth noting that some insurance companies wont insure a Q plate. They are cheaper for a reason.

What I can't get my head around is the fact that it's a 9 digit vin N° (possibly militery?) and a 2286 cc engine ??

Could it be for what ever reason a 2002 Defender that has lost it's identity and sombody has re-registered it with a log book from another vehicle ?

It's currently taxed and tested !
 
Just had confirmation from the vendor that it is in fact a 2002 that lost it's idendification (reason unknown) and has been put on a 1991 log book !

Thoughts ??

The log book must be from a different vehicle. How does a vehicle lose it's ID :confused::confused: and if it did, you wouldn't give it a log book from a different vehicle.

Sounds V dodgy to me.

Have you checked the chassis numbers against the V5 ?
 
Can't see any reason for this other than it's stolen......Would be interested in what the 'police approval' is exactly
 
If it is a 2002 then it would just be given a Q plate and not be pretending to be a 1991. How can it 'lose' its ID? I'd tell the old bill!!

But the Q plate was issued to a 91 vehicle....which has probably been broken and the ID stuck on this one..... probably stolen

You need to find out when it was q plated, if it was after 2002 it could be that it is a genuine stolen recovered landy, the date of registration is doubted or "questionable" as per the q plate. If it was q plated before 2002 the run a mile as it is obviously a stolen landy hiding behind a coasher q plate vin tags and chassis no etc although i cant see anyone wanting to nick a motor and falsely put it on a q plate. a q plate greatly devalues a car and once on one can not be taken off. Having said all this what better way to drive arround in a stolen landy... the police will never bother stoping it as the number plate already tells them it is questionable and that its original id is unknown so why bother pulling it. you could affectively steel a new landy every year and just grind the police chassis no out and reweld in to a newer one, sell the old one on ebay with out id, there seems to be plenty.
My advice would be try to establish the date of registration on a q plate and derrive your desision frome there. Alternatively, would you not just transfer it to french plates anyway? i wouldnt be put off a q plate so long as the price was very much lower than market value by nearly half
