Hey all

My 10 plate 2.4 Puma decided to go in a limp mode today. im guessing its fuel related as another chap i know had problems after filling up at same garage. Anyway it hicked and farted, temp gauge shot up to max and engine cut out. I restarted it where it ran ok and temp gauge was normal again. However not far later is did the same and lost all power. I got home and restarted it. No warnign lights etc but it would not rev up. Then it cut out. Restarted again and it starts but cuts out after 5 seconds, almost like theres no fuel getting to the engine. Any ideas??? I have now drained the fuel and refilled with fresh. like i said, iut starts fine but just dies after 5 seconds. no warning lights at all although the temp gauge shoots up to max (even though the engine isnt overheated?

Sounds like the Ecu is shutting the engine down thinking its overheating. Most likely dodgy coolant temp sensor or chafed wires to it.

Not sure if this is related, but my boss has a ford ranger and after filling up at a local garage instead of BP has he usually does had a similar problem, turned out to be the fuel filter was turning to mush, a common problem on some focus's and mondeos apparently, Took it to fords and they said it was contaminated fuel, and replaced fuel filter but never drained so called contaminated fuel. Alls been fine since. i know ford owned land rover for a while so maybe they have same filter??

thanks for that lads. looks like ill be using my trusty 2.5na ex army to get to work tomoz. ill call at the stealer and see what they say

thought id post an update in case anyone else has similar problem. I got the local experts in and it seems to be a faulty Temp Gauge sender/sensor. Apparently the engine goes into limp mode when the temp gauge gets to a certain temp. Ill find out for sure tomoz when the new part is fitted

See post 3;):D

my neighbour had exactly the same on his Fiat Ducato motor home which is fitted with the same tdci motor,by all accounts its about 1/2 days work to get to it tho

If memory serves me right the ducato motorhome has a kind of double front end and the engine is set right back hence being a PITA. If I'm right the temp sensor is not too bad to get at on the transits and defenders.

Tell yer mate to get himself a spare starter motor fuse cos they are a nightmare for blowing if you accidently start em in gear. (it's called a mega fuse and lives under the passenger floor on top of or beside the battery);)

I had a transit go into limp mode when the coolant ****ed out. Temp reading on dash was reading normal warm value so didn't realise the coolant had gone until I looked under the bonnet. AA man said sensor would have been measuring hot air in the pipe hence reading was ok. If it weren't for limp mode I probably would have damaged the engine.

I know of a puma tratterer who kept having his go into limp mode and the dealer told him it was getting too hot due to the rad needing cleaned. Annoyed him when oft road but at least it saved his engine. He didn't like having to power wash it.

Well ill pop in later and hopefully thats all it was and I can bring it home. Yep RATTY, you were spot on mate :amen:

Or that the Puma uses a Ford engine?
