Obviously need an engine crane but whats this like to do?

It doesn't look that bad after having a look at some images.

its a horrible job........front driveshafts out both sides before you even start unbolting the engine .......doable , but be prepared to have a mountain of removed parts sat next to the Rangerover
 
I bet its a ****in nightmare on one of these bling mobiles.

I've pulled my fare share of RRC engines.

But being the overcomplicated ****heap the L322 is, i doubt you would exit the job with your sanity intact. :eek::D
 
I’m just considering doing mine, as mentioned already, the hardest part would be removing the driveshafts and diff but I’ve been most of the way there before.
Not sure how easy it is to access the engine mounts and if the exhaust manifolds stay in place to save undoing them on the vehicle.
Are you doing an engine swap or just need to access the lower crankcase?
 
Anyone actually done this and lived to tell(even without photos!) Did the engine work first time. What job we're you doing to warrant such drastic surgery? Is it possible to rebuild an engine from one of these? Like bearings crank grind etc?
 
Hey andy its me in your avatar, or will be by the end of this job.

Holiday chicken can explain and has I think, but basically its a nasty knocking and although i don't know much about engines, its seems that the oil pressure isnt equal to each vanos.

My friend is always pulling engines re sleeving, reboring and at the end of the day for the sake of some hassle and time and a special tool or 3 its nicer to have in front of you.

Andy will tell you the amount of crap that came out of the hydraulic lifters. I can only imagine that this is all over the engine oil ways so....

The gearbox has been out before and was completely rebuilt so in our favour there shouldn't be much to cause problems such as seized bolts etc.

Would be nice to have the exhaust headers come out with the engine and gearbox in one, but not really an issue.

I will be consulting RAVE for info, but the biggest headache is going to be clearing andys friggin garage! I can see that being a 5 trip to dump All day event kind of clear out.
 
Watching with interest - ours has VANOS noise - thinking solenoids stuck, but may need VANOS seals done too......

Hi Ant, one thing is for certain, a noisy M62 is not hard to find.

I am just looking into the potential solenoid issue and have ordered a spare one to hopefully produce a test part for measuring the pressure supplied to the vanos. i have spare oil distribution manifolds and can see how it operates by supplying pressurised oil to either the front or rear of the vanos piston or to vent which is channeled up to back of the manifold and sprays onto the cam chain. One side of mine sprays enthusiastically while I am getting nothing from the passenger side when turning the engine by hand so it could be the solenoid or the feed up to it which comes via the troublesome non return valve trapped between the head and the block. One of my vanos units was full of oil when i removed it and one was empty which also points towards an oil supply issue. The only thing that doesn't ring true is i don't have any timing errors stored.
The rattle sounds nasty but the car drives like new and has loads of power and no engine noise can be heard when driving, but i know it's there...

i don't fancy taking the engine and gearbox out as one as although this looks quite simple on a 740I, there is the 'small' issue of the transfer box on the back which I have had out on it's own before and its a fookin odd shape to try and lift and heavy in all the wrong places - ahh, how i miss her.;)

The diff has to come out as well as it's bolted to the sump, unlike the 740, but it is very handy having a loony to hand..

Not to mention the 5 ft breaker bar for the crank bolt, I also have a proper gas torch now.
I have ordered everything I need to check oil pressure feeding the vanos, if that’s good I’ll throw in another vanos unit and new seals again in the left , and maybe try the original main timing chain tensioner back in.
If it still rattles I’ll chuck in some 10w50 or I’ll let you take it out but the transmission needs to stay in as it’s bigger than my garage :)
Just for the record, it has recently had new cam chain tensioners, new oil distribution manifolds, new metal cam seals, all 32 HVA tappets removed, stripped and cleaned, cam shaft clearance checked with plastigauge and all this on top of the new new vanos seals, timing chains and guides I did a while back.
It’s currently filled with Mobil 1 0w-40...
