No probs.
Update is that the ecu lookie likey is in fact a Speedomatic Cruise computer.

That would explain the sensors on the propshaft then.

I have put a new earth strap on and narrowed the noise down to a relay under the dash that looks like a starter relay, problem is I cannot find any Lucas relays with that number on , its either an 8 or 3 then 3188H which does not correspond to any relay so far I can find.
Also it only has three connections where a starter relay has four C1 is negative G2 is earth and W1 is live.
Am trawling wiring diagrams

Flasher relays only have three pins. Are you sure you have the right one?

Ps noticed your Gibraltar crest , I was out there with the TA four years ago, smashing place.

Never been there, but the mob i was in were there once a long time ago. In 1704 when they nicked it from the dagos.

Not altogether suprised by your 'old girl's' lack of corrosion, I had an '85 a few years ago that was in good shape despite an obviously hard life in previous hands. There is a persistant rumour (never confirmed by LR of course ) that the quality of steel, used from the intro of the Disco in '89, took a dive. The old Chrysler 'box is a solid piece of kit, just more wasteful on power than the later ZF, hope you can sort the problem.

Multi meter now works.

Tightened connections on starter motor as they were loose on the spade connectors on the solenoid, no joy, new earth ,no joy, twenty minutes charge on the battery ,now reading 13.5 volts and Broom.

So it would seem if the battery is slightly drained she will not start ??????

Might invest in one of those solar powered trickle chargers and she is not used a lot.

The old girl started several times earlier, had lunch, watched the news and went back outside, started her ,all ok.

Put the dash panel back together ,all tickedy boo and guess what? did not want to start

ARGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Took it all apart again and it starts.

One thing I did notice is if you operate the indicators or wipers when she is in non cooperational mood they run slow.

Off to bang my head against a wall....

Bad earth somewhere i would think.

I too have a 1985 (pre-injection) 4 door Classic, but mine has a 5 speed manual box. So it won't have this Autobox speedomatic cruise thingy. I'll have a scan though the info I've got for an Auto wiring diagram though.

I have already found that the wiring diagrams in both the 1970-1985 and the 1970-1992 editions of the Haynes OWM cannot possibly be true, and I am considering doing a 100% tap out and trace on the looms. Reluctant to start this though, as she's currently running tickety-boo like. Don't want to upset her, do I ?

Mine's a super-basic Classic. It don't have 'leccy windows or mirrors either. The only complicated bit is balancin' and tweakin' it's twin CD175s, which unusually are marked as 'Solex' not 'Stromberg' as expected.

I too have heard this 'Change of steel' rumour. The only rust found on ths 27 year old banger is a little surface rust on the diff covers and brake splash guards. Sorted with a splash of Neutrarust and bitumen paint.

Mind you, before I got it last year, it had been hibernating in a dry garage for ten years. New Battery ... Broom Broom ... on the ten year old petrol too.

Johnny.

One thing I have noticed in the big old Range Rover manual is that in the picture of the starter motor relay (86.55.05) it clearly has three connections ,one going to earth.

Go to the wiring diagram on 86-8 the starter relay (66) has four connections
W1 -earth,
W2- Ignition switch and Brake circuit check relay,
C1- Starter motor
C2-Live ,from starter.

Now even more confused.

As aside , years ago had a 1984 Series Three Derv which had shocking rust in the chassis, the rumour was that loads of chassis were left out in the elements during a strike in '84 and all from that period has terrible rust issues later.

I dont normally suggest going to halfudds , but they will do battery test for free that is more thorough than your mulitmeter.

I have a two door, is yours a two door?

my starter relays are by the washer bottle, get your wife to hold the key over and give them a tap, see if it jumps in to life.

and as has been said before there are no ecu's on that autobox. Chrysler troqueflite A727, a very tough box used on american muscle cars. a good box to have.

I am a little further south than you but if you fancy going laning in the Meon vally let me know, going in a few weeks.

1985 seems to have been a complex period in RR construction. Fuel injection was first introduced (along with it's ECU), just after they built mine in August I'm thinking. Leccy windows, mirrors and aircon were optional, as were 4sp, 5sp, or Auto boxes, and who knows what else was thrown into the mix. Mine does have an electronic ignition module though.

The hardest bit being trying to work out which wiring diagram to go by ???
The one I've latched onto for mine clearly shows a 20way fuse box in the middle, just as there is right in the middle of my dashboard. It seems to be the only diagram that shows this fuse box, but I have found several places where the diagram just doesn't make sense.

Does your RRC have this 20way central fuse box, and as Fett asked, is it a two or four door? Just checking if we're singing from the same hymn sheet, like.

Item 93 (starter solenoid relay) shows five connections ...
1 ... +batt
2 ... ign sw
3... starter solenoid
4 ... air con ???
5 ... earth (which goes via the start inhibit switch for an automatic).

My interpretation ... no earth = no go.
Mystified why there's an aircon connection here though.
Not a problem for me as I don't have aircon.

I'm assuming these relays are somewhere inside the dashboard as I've not seen any yet, apart from one under the hifi which I'm pretty sure is hooked into the (after market, non functioning) alarm.

On sucking the brains of a local(ish) LR mechanic when I first got it ... his first comment was "Oh ****, it's an '85".

Wishing you luck.

Johnny.

also the wires drop off the fuse box,(all 3 fuses!)

Three ??? I've got twenty of the lil' boogers in one box !
Possibly more hiding elswhere ???

BL didn't employ French sparkies in the 80's did they? (Fond memories of a 1972 Citroen DS)
