Yeah, I loosened them all off, replaced the ones I had overtightened and did them all in sequence again, but as you said before, might have squished the HG too much and now it's got gaps.

Yep defo a squished HG!

Might be worth running a bottoming tap down the head bolt holes to clean up the threads.

Also to avoid pulling any already weak threads out of the block add a chamfer to the top of the holes.

It's at times like these that happy amateurs realise, that being a skilled mechanic is not quite as easy as they think it is. :D

He's probably noticed something we've all missed

Not really just a general comment. But how do you manage to over tighten the head bolts. A couple of sequence passes at 15 lb ft to snug then two sequential 90 degrees is not rocket science. Wonder if he noticed that the head bolts are 7/16" UNC and the bolt heads are 5/8" AF. I wish him luck in his endeavours, but maybe he needs to take a little more care. ;)

If the op has got that much water ejecting from the cylinder it maybe possible that a foreign body could be trapped between the gasket and the deck/head.

I made a mistake, I was rushing because I was excited to get it on the road. I was also working in a garage that was about 4 Degrees C at the time.
I had realised long ago that my engine was in fact imperial, despite contrary advice in other parts of the internet.

It seems that some people aren't willing to support others who are having a go at keeping old LR and RR going. Shame, I was enjoying documenting on here what was going on. It only takes one to spoil your fun and that's exactly what you have done.

I was also listening very keenly to advice offered on here by all, but I have to make decisions based on what I see, not what the internet tells me, all advice has been gratefully received and has lead to success in most parts except for my muck ups.

I won't be continuing with this fred because I just can't be arsed.

Thats a shame, many of us are in the same boat as you,and were enjoying what was happening. Some people dont make mistakes as you have learned. dont let them put you off

Dear OP, please don't take my post as any kind of criticism. We've all had cock ups assorted over the years. It was merely an observation, that is all.

The folks on here are here to help.

And give advice through their own personal journeys.

Stick around and tell us what ails your engine because we're genuinely interested - we've come this far:).

I'm not convinced you've cocked up. Sometimes these things are just pot luck , new gasket or not, and I'm a specialist at cocking up :D
First thing I did with my P38 was lift it on coils - people were harsh - yet they were the first ones to help when I needed it. Thick skin is good for 4•C - your one of us, and don't you forget it o_O

P.S - we know you've been tinkering with blowers/interior between jobs, so keep them pics coming, we all want to see...;)

No problem everybody makes a mistake. I once knocked my brew over that the apprentice had just made, when i was rebuilding a V8. Carry on i am sure others will benefit.

Jeezy creezy @wammers you can be a condescending and obnoxious bugger at times.
I'm the first to sing your praises when it comes to the P38 but there was no need for any of that.
The guy had a great thread going, made a mistake, admitted it and you pulled him to bits.
It's cliquey attitudes like this that ruin otherwise good forums.
Give the guy a break FFS!

I was going to just restart this thread once I had the engine running and knew it was ok, but, in all things range rover, I'm coming back because all is not well and it's getting interesting/ REALLY ****ING ANNOYING! :D

So since the last post, I have replaced the FUBAR'ed HG on the N/S bank. Started it up and moved it out of the garage last night and it wasn't happy.

Now, I am 100% sure that we (a friend of mine, who is a time served mechanic and is happy to look over my shoulder important parts, and I ) Have done both heads the correct way. However last night it was coughing and spluttering a little on the O/S bank, The bank with the head gasket that I did not do wrong.

After a little drive to his today, it wasn't happy, very low on power and spluttering away. Left it parked at his for 10 minutes while we looked at his discovery 2 project. then came back, started it up and there was LOADS of steam.

Interestingly, the HG we removed that I mucked up, even though it had been overtightened, had not stuck properly to the head....

The original head gasket turned up in a Payen style board and packaging, the second set of HG is a genuine Payen with the hologram anorl….

Extremely frustrating!

Still, a trip to the scrapyard gave me an almost brand new auto dimming rear view mirror, new instrument surround cover and fuel flap switch and an ABS ECU for spare.
Since my last post I have also had the dash out and back in and done a load of work under the dash and gave the RR a clean. Cobar blue looks amazing when clean.
