Hi, Im looking for some advice about a project I am wanting to take on.

I am looking for a landrover 90 300tdi to turn in to an overland camping vehicle for a trip in South Africa I am making.

Im struggling to find any vehicles that fit the bill, they have either already been through a rebuild and I don't fancy ripping apart somebody hard work or more than I am wanting to pay.

What im ideally looking for is a 90 300tdi that needs work doing to it between £1000 - 1500 but if i can get one cheaper that's a bonus.

Anyone no where i can search and find such a vehicle?

Cheers

:hysterically_laughi All you will get is one as rotten as a pear, that said I bought a v8 90 on a C plate tidy and shouldn't cost more than £200 in bits to get mot'd cost £350 from local retired chap with horses
Everyone wants Diesel and the 300 tdi will be worth more than petrol ones.

Best advice is either expect to spend the money for a reasonable one, or by a 19j and fit a 200 or 300tdi conversion

I honestly think that you will struggle to find a 300tdi 90 for anywhere near your budget of £1000 - £1500, even a vehicle that needs some serious attention can fetch around £2500 at the moment. It's the engine that you're essentially paying the money for and as fanatic said, it will work out much cheaper if you simply buy an older 90, say a 1986 2.5 N/A or TD which you might be able to get your hands on for £1250ish and then simply transplant a newer diesel into it, it's not too big a job. Personally i'd suggest a 200tdi over the 300tdi for a couple of reasons:

1) More torque - the 200tdi engines have much more torque than the 300tdi engines and they are generally all around more powerful off the mark.

2) Better fuel consumption - I have recently been able to achieve (on average) 42mpg with my 200tdi, you wont get close to this kind of milage from a 300tdi.

On the other hand, a 300tdi is supposed to be a more 'refined' engine what with its serpentine belt driven pulleys, re-designed rocker shaft assembly and both electronically controlled fuel injection and exhaust-gas-recirculation on the later models. The loss in power and increased fuel consumption do make me wonder however.
