hi all
please help?
i have started my search for a wolf defender, what i cant get my head around is the pricing of the beast?
from ex army surplus i can get one starting around the £6.000 upto £10.000 this depends from what i see is mileage, and condition{repaired chassie/bulkhead/cross members etc this i understand but when you check the private sales/forecourts they seem to pick a price out of thin air generally starting around the £12.000 mark going to the skys the limit
am i missing something so simple its flying over my head or are they confusing any issues to muddy the water?
hope someone can point me in the right direction,as i hope to buy one in around 2 months time{solicators/barristers pending}
cheers in advance

are they not just reconditioned with a 300 tdi and a r380 transmission with a internal roll cage????????

I assume you've seen the ones in the current tender auction at Withams?

Go have a look at a load there on the viewing days, then bid and see what happens, if you don't succeed have a look at what they do sell for on there, then try again in a month.

Don't forget though that they don't come taxed, tested or have ID's on them, so, you'll need to trailer it away then apply for the documents for it, so, think about that when choosing a price - oh and every bid is ex-vat... so add 20% on too!

thanks all, going to try to get to withams and a few others in the next month or so will keep you posted on any progress
cheers

They are not an updated standard Army 90 or 110 at all, the 1's that where upgraded with new seats and roll cage & hood or hard top where called Tithonus Land Rovers

Wolf Land Rovers where Factory delivered as they are now...300tdi engined R380 gearboxes Heavy duty chassis etc...

They are currently still highly priced because they have only recently started to be disposed of by the MOD...before the recent disposals the only 1's that came on the market where damaged in service by IED's etc...then rebuilt by enthusiasts....

If your really interested in them it would be worth checking out the exmil land rover forum or MILWEB

They should keep coming down in price as more and more of them come available !

Cheers

Mike

Mate be careful when looking for a Wolf. The Mod is currently getting rid of the surplus 90 (TUL)'s. They aint any good when converted to bowman so most going to Withams are soft tops. The ones that are going are usually fecked.

For the Mod to sell of a vehicle it usually has to meet certain criteria. The most common is the repair cost is un-econominal for the vehicle. So it goes for sale. Withams pay a very small price for what they get then mark it up somewhat.

The unit next to me has 5 Wolf TULs awaiting disposal, they look good but we had to tow them back from repair . Knackered engines and drive train mostly.

And if you do find a decent wolf bear in mind its been used and abused and repaired by young lads and lasses that arent as carefull as yoursell.

Happy hunting if you want any advice just ask!

If you are interested in buying something a bit cheaper then I know that a lot of the Tithonus 110s are going to withams asap. They're being replaced at ta units with the wolf's and I've seen quite a few go down that are totally immaculate

They have a much more heavy duty chassis as well as far as I can remember

not from what i have read, and will be damned if I'll look for it. But what i remembered is the load area is stronger and that is it everything else is the same.

The name wolf is just a selling point people willing to part with there hard earned money. Bragging rights do cost money.

Chassis
The chassis is considerably different in design to the standard Defender chassis even though it looks similar. The side walls are standard, most of the rest is bespoke. The additional rear load bed mounting was to take increased weights as the standard chassis kept punching big dents in the rear floor.

Chassis made after the production run (service chassis) are slightly different, later ones have a triangular reinforcement behind the front outriggers, none of them have the front round tube going through the main chassis walls as it is more costly to tool and produce although it is stronger.

The chassis wasn’t galvanised due to the additional weight it adds. There were also Health and Safety concerns about the gases involved in welding a galvanised chassis.

WMIKs made from the factory had two outriggers in the middle of the chassis instead of just one on a standard Wolf chassis. The second outrigger is to take the extra load of the gun mounting. Many WMIKs were converted from Wolfs and kept one outrigger.

The chassis on all Wolfs was sprayed internally with Dinitrol rust proofing.

Withams have 2 lovely Lightweights at present... don't think they've ever been used... bad timing with our house move for me to buy one sadly though :'(

Lovely landy's, I was looking to get one before I got my 05 110 (which I love) but what put me off was talking to those in the know. I was reliably informed that they would depreciate like a stone as more and more hit the market over the next few years. I was also informed that, as you would expect, the military would keep the best until last.

It was enough to put me off for a good few years.

My understanding is the the MOD is getting rid of all 90's but keeping the 110 Wolfs..

I had a 2.5NA hard top 90 ex-MOD and it had been well maintained and the chassis was in extremely good nick...bought it, ran it for 18 months and sold it for more than I payed for it...

Its getting rid of the 90 soft tops, as they cant be converted for bowman, not enough room and to unstable.

Any 110 soft tops are being converted to hard tops and fitted for bowman, you,ll be hard pushed to find a 110 wolf and if you do it i,ll be fecked hence why its up fur sale
