Hi,

Have a question for you re the power steering. It's on a 1.8k series.

No massive problem but just doesn't feel quite right.

I get a lot of noise when turning, any amount of direction change and sounds like it comes from the steering wheel itself, almost sounds like an electrical whine or something dry if you get what i mean. Is fairly loud and is always a radio on job to drown it out.

With no turning effort on the steering wheel i can hear a hiss sound until i start to move the wheel just a fraction and it stops, then just the normal power steering sound you expect (minus the steering wheel noise i described)

The unions on the rack are corroding away nicely but no fluid leaks. The fluid is quite dark looking and intend to renew this anyway.

I did notice in the engine bay the hose that comes from the rack to the cooler (return pipe?) is quite flat as apposed to round, is this normal?

Any advice greatly appreciated

the pipe is flat.
I was told the one on my freelander had collapsed. so ordered a new one from LR.
the new one was flat in the same place. so I didn't change it, took it back and got a refund. less 25% restocking.
(please not it has been known for me to be wrong)

Can you remember the cost of the pipe?

Don't mind replacing and playing parts darts if it's cheap, if a replacement looks the same and is the norm id rather save the pennies and start with a fluid change and see what happens.

The trick is to watch the hoses while a helper turns the wheel. You may see the hose getting flatter at times.
Ideally the hose could do with an internal support coil.

Good shout, I will do that.

Anyone know where the best point to drain out the fluid? want to get out as much as possible before refilling.

as you can see from the photo, its flat. no I don't know why. it just is.

no I am not selling it, its just to show the pipe

Thanks Myotherwrold.

No sense in replacing that then!!

Lets see what happens after a fluid change. Picked up 5L of dexron3 ATF fluid today.

For the fluid change Im going to try......

Remove fluid from the bottle until below the return pipe. remove return pipe from bottle. seal of that part on the bottle.
put the Return pipe into a bucket.
Fill the bottle with new fluid, start the engine whilst pouring fresh fluid into the bottle.

This (Should) empty the entire system and flush.......... Although I do have visions of too much flow/pressure and covering my engine bay and self in ATF fluid!!!!!! we will see, Live and learn and all that.

I'll take some pics of the success or complete disaster!

is there any leak from the pump ? also check the belt is not slipping .you will get a squeal of it when turning if it is one its way out.

You won't need anything like 5 liters!! Total system capacity is less than 1 Liter. Drain it out on of the cooler pipes. Refill, run the engine while monitoring the level and slowly turn the steering lock to lock. Drain and repeat if you like.

No leak or belt squeel.

Need to replace the leaky water pump at the weekend so new cambelt and tensioner going on, whilst its all going to be apart I have replacement drive belts also so any belt issues will be ruled out.
Unless the pump or rack are on their way out I cant really see a lot wrong. Hopefully some fresh fluid will be the answer.

I got the 5liters on offer, Not a great deal more expensive than buying two litres, Gives me the option of plenty of flushing!. If a component fails at least I will already have the fluid!!

Jury still out on this one.

Replaced the fluid and burped the system, 100% improvement, no steering noise and nice and light to turn.

After a short drive the noise came back and steering abit heavier.

Took the cap of the fluid bottle and turned lock to lock for a couple of mins with the engine running. It was better after this but noticed the fluid level had risen above max, was at the same position in the morning so took some fluid out.

drove fine for 20mins then same again.

repeated as above and again noticed the fluid level was ounce again above max.

Ideas????!!!!

Hi - Old thread - but was it solved please?? I have exact same problem on a TD4 - guess the power steering is similar. Fluid comes up and over top, hissing when driving, hiss goes when wheel turned slightly. All power assistance seems fine and just passed MOT.

Be grateful for any updates...

does the oil get frothy

Not frothy no, but comes up to top and then back down again when turning steering. Is there a reducer somewhere? In one or other of the pipes, or in an outlet from the pump?

Sounds like the pump is working all the time, not just when turning. If you put the slightest touch on the steering wheel (either way) the noise stops.

Thanks - is Dave Design still on here???

pump is working all the time ,oil is diverted to either side of the piston by the rotary valve which may likely be your issue, unless pump pressure is excessive

Thanks, just reading up on how to do a pressure check !
Assume rotary valve is in rack?? Any filters or reducers in the system that you know of?
Cheers
