first off its lh thread and shock it undone with hammer on spanner handle rather than pull,if that dont work get large punch and hit nut then retry

Where are you?

I presume you have the correct Viscous Fan removal spanner? Not really easy without it, perhaps someone near you would have one to lend you.

Mine cost me £12 from Halfords and after its single use sits in my toolbox.

Oh and remember its reverse thread. I know its already been said on here, but worth repeating. I knew it and still wasted a good 10 minutes trying to turn it the conventional way only to give up that evening, then in the morning remember and take a few seconds to undo it....

borrowed a spanner to remove the fan came off no problem
removed the power steering pump reassembled and run the engine up too temperature when removing the trapped air I turned the bolt the plastic one top of the thermostat housing the bolt sheared somebody who had the Disco before me super glued it back together

why do you think
my guess is to make thing easy for yourself and it needed to come off

Calm down mate ! It doesnt NEED to come off to change the PAS pump at all. Done the job multiple times and never needed to . If you want it out the way, thats up to you,but it doesnt NEED to come off for that reason.Just like you dont need to make posts in that tone.

I asked for advise not the nonsense you wrote with no explanation

Anyway the job is done thanks I did it my way

Beatcha to it !:D:D:D

I am a professional superviser for boatengines and must react on your.......besserwisser bull****.
I just taken out the pump of my -98 300 Tdi.
Your posts are not only inadekvat, it is aslo rude, unpolite and does not even have the slighest guidence.
Sorry, but I do not believe you ever done one on any late 300 Tdi unless you like to crawl on the ground and get dirty and have the oil raining on you.
The reasons to take the fan off are, to start with, get some space and not hurt or get hurt by the fan blades.
It is also irresponsible not to undo the fan, drain the cooling a little and pump out the oil if some left and then
put a big can under the engine to catch she spill.
So herefore I would say, YES it is needed to take the fan off so you can take the front cover out as well.
To add to anyone who like to do this job clean and without acting like an ape under the car a little tip
is that before you start the work; clean the area, especially the oil hoses and connections, The top of thu steering house to avoid dirt when later on bleeding. Also o ease the loosing of the hp oilconnection (16mm spanner) put the frame back on the pump with one of the 10mm SHORT bolts in a position so it is not in the way for the 16mm spanner. Then you can easy fit a wrench and hold the pump steady when you loose the pump.
According to my expierence today it is very easy also to loosen the holder for the oilreservoir, loosen the hose going to the pump and let that (one "clip" halfways) hose follow the pump out. If it is clean it is a pleasure.
Best regards from Stockholm in Sweden.
