A friend of mine wants to chip his 95 diesel range rover p38 (he finds its slugish and uses a little too much fuel) and as i have a petrol version i need help from you guys to recomend the best and not too costly fitment for him. thanks.

PSI Power box quick and simple to fit, no risk of destroying the EDC by soldering chips in and can equally easily be removed if needed.
Will eventually eat the auto box so an oil and filter change should be done at the same time.

ves sport scottish company sell them on ebay £120
it is solder in, but you solder in the holder then fit the chip so if you want you can revert to the original chip.
no need to destroy anything just need a solder sucker and a steady hand!

and a soldering iron that does not produce eddy currents that can destroy chips, plus suitable means of discharging static electricity from from your body

why is the tuning chips on p38's solder in jobbys ?

is there not a plug in option ?

It's an old ECU in the P38, 80's tech and the ROM cannot be re-programmed. Newer vehicle ECU's like my Transit use flash memory and can be re-programmed (remapped) via the OBD connector

I have experimented with a few different chips in my p38. I have tried a superchip, a Jeremy Fearne V2 chip, a couple of others and one from these guys based in the Czech Republic :-

RANGE ROVER 2.5 TDS Power chip,Chiptuning !!! | eBay

The guy writes his own maps. Goes well but I haven't done a long term evaluation. I am presently running a J Fearne chip.

As mentioned unsoldering the chip from the ECU is not for the faint hearted. I have done one but you really need all the gear. I got a local diesel engineer (a superchip dealer) to fit a zif socket to a second ECU for £35.

You will need to open up the ECU to identify which chips are fitted. There are I think about 8 different types listed.
