Haven’t posted for a while but after a bit of advice if anyone could help
I have a Landrober discovery td5. I was driving earlier and temp went up to 3/4 then dropped. Temp light came on and lost power. Was 2 miles before I could pull over safely whilst driving at about 40. Popped the hood and no water. Put water in and you could see it pouring out. Garage collected and said new hose. Couple hundred pounds to fix but they won’t be able to tell if engine is damaged until they fix hose. They said fairly high prob that engine is knackered but won’t know for sure. I have 2 questions really 1). I have asked them to fix pipe anyway, but what do you think chances are engine Is done for (I appreciate no one may be able to answer this)
2). If engine is done for would the car be worth anything if I sold it? If so how much? Or is it literally worth £100 scrappage.
Any thoughts appreciated
 
There's no reason to suspect the engine is damaged, until that's been proven.

A couple of hundred £ sounds a lot for a hose, but some hoses can be quite expensive.

If the vehicle is in good condition, other than the engine, then it's worth much more than scrap value. ;)
 
Not much choice really, though I can't believe they are going to charge you that just to buy and fit a hose then fill it up!
You may be lucky, some cars can manage a short distance with little cooling, relying on the oil to keep it safe, but if not then you could be looking at a blown head gasket or worse. Damage to crank, pistons, cylinder bores, big end bearings, warped cylinder head, etc etc.
If it was me I'd put a new hose on, fill it up and start it up. Then take it from there.

Thanks, I’m getting them to do it anyway. Yeah dodgy section of a11 and roadworks, prob less than 2 miles but felt like that much going at 40

I don't believe the TD5 is as durable without coolant as the 1.9 VW turbo diesel engine. I've seen those VW engines driven for 10 miles without coolant (water pump bearings often fail) without any engine damage at all. Replacement pump and timing belt, fill with coolant and off they go for another 100K miles. :eek: Good touch engine them Pre PD VW 1.9 engines.:D

If the oil pressure light didn't come on, signifying that the oil had got so hot/thin that its pressure dropped enough to put it on, you may well have got away with it.

It may well not be. Newer engines ain't often as tough as olduns! We just have to cross our fingers!

You won't know until the coolant issue is fixed. I don't know if the ECU implements a limited operating strategy with an over temperature scenario, like some vehicles do.
 
See what happens after its repaired. If it keeps loosing water or getting hot you will know it's had it. If it's finished and you need the space I would just scrap if you don't want to fix it. I tried selling my manky but running disco for £500 for a couple weeks but gave up. Now trying to sell the engine for 400 now 300 but nobody is interested.

Thanks Russell, yeah wouldn’t be able to keep it to do it up really and need a 2nd car. This was originally bought for the 4 boys we have so they could all fit in but spent a lot on it since buying it so happy to sell and get smaller can and just run 2 cars. Webuyanycar say £1500 if working so worth a lot more as long as I can get it running I suppose ‍♂️

+1 to this, ECUs bing clever cattle they may well save the engine, at least a bit, peeps like sieraferry will know!

Webuyanycar were good in my experience and paid me a good price for my old car. They couldnt have been more helpful.

To answer both these posts, what I meant was £1500 would be a fair price, well fairish, but they will quote you that and then will knock the price down for every little thing, or so I have heard from others. Companies advertise round us "Higher price paid than Webuyanycar.com guaranteed."
Back in 2014 I bought mine GS auto with 150k on the clock, for £1850 so £3000 is either tongue in cheek or unrealistic. Have you looked on Gumtree and Autotrader for prices for comparison?
But we are getting ahead of ourselves here. Lets see if it can be made to run first!

RAVE does say that ECT sensor input is used "to limit engine operation if coolant temperature is too high" so it should have gone into safe mode and hence the loss of power. And for that money, the least they can do is to use genuine parts :)
