Its a 2000 td5 disco 2. I went out this morning 2 go get my caravan from storage ready for tomorrow. On the way I noticed a strange whistling/rubbing noise. It seams to be coming from the front passenger side of the engine. It goes up and down with the engine revs.
Could this just be a belt tensioner or something more drastic.
It runs and drives fine. Well apart from the dreaded 3 amigos just come on again.

Any help would be great as supposed 2 be going away with caravan in the morning

Take a look under the bonnet with enging running and get someone to rev it and see you can narrow the noise down. The belt tensioner is at the front nearer the drivers sidr.
However the turbo is on the passengers side. Any excess smoke? Exhaust manifold ? Is the vehicle remapped?

Hi, the noise seems louder under the car but cant pinpoint it as so many other noises. There is no smoke from exhaust and all round the manifold looks clean. I not sure about the remap as only had the car since feb. But it has had the egr deleted

Check your exhaust manifold bolts have not sheared-actually put a spanner or socket on em and see if tight

Take the fan shroud off (4 screws need turning 3/4 of a turn) and look at the belt condition/evidence of it fowling on anything/slackness, belt residue anuwhere etc (engine off!!!) Then stand back and look at it whilst engine running

Right I have checked manifold and all nuts are tight. Checked turbo and all seems fine. Belt all looks good but does have a bit of wear on 1 side on the top but nothing major. Will be going tomorrow and wait till the noise gets worse so I can hear were its coming from or wait till something happens

Had this with mine whilst towing my caravan to norfolk last week.auxhillary belt guide pulley flew apart in several pieces.cost me £68 for new belt and pulley.teach me to ignore.

the one next to it as min has no aircon. you could take the belt off to see if noise changes.both pulleys are the same though land rover tell you not.just take some spanners with you and viscous fan spanners.i didnt and had to get my son to drive from leics to weybourne with tools then use his car to drve to norwich for parts.

I have made it 2 site but think it is something 2 do with turbo. I getting a small puff of smoke now and then and its down on power. Looking through the front grill there is some oil on the bottom right corner of the intercooler. Could it b this?

Could just be it....
If that is indeed where your problem lies, I believe what you were hearing was the sound of the compressor's blades making contact with the housing on account of excessive play.... I certainly hope it turns out that is not the case but you are going to have to remove the intake hose from the suction end of the turbo to check for any deformation of the blades.
And it looks like your intercooler might be leaking because if oil can escape from it, then you are certainly losing boost pressure as well.

Ahh wiered that cos when we got back to leics one of my silcon pipes popped off intercooler.noticed odd puffs of smoke and down on power.check your hoses for splits or loose clips.

I had something like this. Cheeping noise from 1800 revs upwards with power on, goes away immediately when power off.
My exhaust manifold was warped and one bolt sheared.
£50 secondhand manifold + gaskets + 3 hours labour - ouch!

I am getting more confused now. The noise is there all the time but louder at 2000rpm. Sometimes it drives fine but then suddenly it starts holding back like the handbrake is slightly on. All the hoses are on but cant take them off and check inside untill sunday when I get home. If it lasts that long:confused:

Check small pipes from wastegate modulator.
Check airfilter and box has lid on properly

had a look at air filter and seems like it has had the life sucked out of it, there are big gaps between the fins. Its only 4 months old 2. Anyway I have replaced that and noise is still there. Think its gonna have 2 go in to a garage for the 1st time since I have had it. Witch is not good news as will mean money

No egr has been removed. I have noticed a little soot around the flexi part of downpipe so maybe that. Think I am going 2 have 2 start changing parts. Will try scrap yard 1st I think.

Take a look at the inside of the hose that goes from the turbo to the intercooler. Check for delamination inside.

I have just got in from removing and checking every turbo hose and pipes, they all look good and are all tight, I have sprayed wd40 on all the belt pullys that I can get to and tried moving the downpipe while someone revs it but nothing has changed. The noise does seem louder if I lay under the drivers side so now thinking poss alternator or tensioner.
