hi ive got td5 gs 1999. when driving temp gauge goes up and i loss power and also loss heat in the car , once u turn engine off and leave for about 10 mins and then turn engine back on it runs fine for another while or so. can anyone tell me why this is?
Check your oil and coolant levels first off. Is there any creamy emulsion in the oil or oil film in the coolant? Is there any white smoke from the exhaust especially when it happens?The heater going cold is because your heater matrix is filling up with steam instead of coolant. The loss of power is because it is overheating. Have you bled the air out of the syatem when filling the coolant back up is there the correct amount of antifreeze to stop the water freezing overnight? The problem could be because the coolant is low, bad circulation like bushtoy says or even headgasket. You need to start with the basic checks first.

Is your mileage around 200K kms? If so... that seems to be the point at which TD5 engines start to fail.
My partner's one started with the same nonsense before bursting a succession of water pipes and heading for suspected head gasket problems. We hardly go anywhere without checking water level and keep the revvs below 2K at all times. When that aircon changes temp we know we're dangerously low on water.
Check your water pipes, check the other things mentioned and don't push the engine too hard.

RATS!! my personal TD5 is sitting at 325,000 km and still 95% original motor...only changed the injector harness and oil cooler so far, and purrs along. i have 40 of them in one of my companys, and they are all at 250,000km plus with no major failures yet, and they all live offroad 98% of the time. only thing we do differently is full service every 3000km.

Better than being called an "old bus" (which my Resident Expert does... at which point she usually stalls in the middle of an intersection and gets called a good few other names)!

Thanks guys. She's awesome to drive, slow as she is - the kind of truck (sorry, LANDY ) that makes you grin just getting into her. (She has featured around p160 of the UK Land Rover Monthly mag this year with a couple of her adventures... )
Have learnt a huge amount during the past year restoring her - and the learning curve's not over yet. Back fuel tank going in today after a redo.
Bit impractical for a hilly commute, but sorts out BMW drivers with her impressive airhorn and front bumper!!! I've been alternating using her with the aforementioned TD5 Disco 2 to minimize fuel costs while maximizing commute-pleasure, hence my opinion on the TD5 engine.
