i thought i blew a piston, whipped the head off and turned the crankshaft by hand to find which piston it is. no 2 & 3 are not moving togeather. 3 moves before 2 does by about a inch on the down stroke. any ideas?? ive done a search and cant find anything

If 2 stays at TDC while 3 has moved an Inch down the bore it sounds a lot like big or little end bearing gone. Thing to do is put 2 and 3 on Top Dead Centre, then turn the engine by hand until 2 starts to move down the bore a mil or 2. Place a couple of fingers part on the edge of the piston and part on the block and give the piston a good firm tap down with a piece of wood, a hammer handle is ideal. If the piston goes down the bore with a lump something has too much play. What were the symptoms that lead you to take the head off?

Lost power, lost oil pressure and got a knock. Typical symptoms of big end failure, but wouldn't cause gases to come out of the dipstick. Were the gases really being blown out of the dipstick tube hard, or was it a moderate puff?

mine was the same when i took the head off. I had a well bent conrod.
if its a 2.5 td i have a practically new set of pistons and a full set of conrods.
message me if your interested.

took the sump off today, no2 conrod had only one bolt holding it on to the crank. cant get the basterd piston out though, is there a trick to it?

cheers filfan, but i got a set just incase i need them. good job i did now

Head off and knock the piston down thru the bottom of the bore. use a lump of wood on the piston and hit it with a big hammer..

piston will only be removed through the top not bottom of the bore. Last 1 i did the rod was that well bent I had to cut off the lower part of the con rod to extract it out of the bore

because there is hardly any clearance for the end of the conrod in the bore its a git. if the conrod is bent it wont come out on its own. I was lucky enough to use an air hacksaw. manged to wedge the end of the rod with a bit of wood then cut 1 side of the rod off. took about 10 mins in total. be sure not to damge the crank and clean all filings off. the only other way is to take the engine out and rebuild it. makes a good orniment once its out. mine bent that much it took a good chunk off the bottom of the block casting when it happened.

i was tring to get it out the top, but i could only get it just past the first ring

If it won't go up it'll be a crankshaft out job. and by the time you've replaced all the seal caps etc etc you'd be better off getting a reconditioned short engine.

dot force it out without taking a leg off. if you do you could damage the bore. then its expensive

well if i take my leg off i will get enough off my insurance to buy another disco that works (and a auto because i will only have one leg)

still a little drastic. but if u must go down that root. have a look to see what booze is on offer. will help with the pain
