i have a 2000 freelander td4 their is a pipe at the passenger side at the front which comes down and every now and then it makes a noise and vents steam can anyone tell me why it does this and also should it do it.

Sounds like the engine pre-heat motor that uses diesel to help warm up the td4 engine a bit quicker, most td4s have them but they only usually come on if its below 4c, its on the passenger side at the bottom of the front bumper
 
thanks that sounds like the one it has only been coming on since it started to get cold but not all the time only when its cold
