Hi Guys

Seem to have a small drip coming from the under side of my L322 4.4 :eek: the fluid appears to be a thin, none oily pink fluid, anybody any ideas what this could be? Was thinking cooliant but just wanted confirmation?? Its not a massive leak i.e. pouring out it just seems to be a small drip.

If it's none oily it can only be antifreeze. Is it the same colour as the coolant in your header tank?
 
Assuming your transmission has got the right stuff in it, your ATF will be an amber colour (looks like thin honey)

Yes there is clear ATF but most of it is redish. The clear stuff is usefull for making diesel 45 gallons of parrafin 1 gallon of clear ATF= 46 gallons of diesel. Don't tell anybody though it's illegal. :D:D:D

Are you fer real .............???? Really it does make diesel ??? ....Why am I singin "Esso Blue blue blue blue Esso Blue!!"

Have just checked the spot where it was dripping last night and the spot has completely gone away so its not an oil its a water based fluid just been looking at the radiator and it appears to be wet in the lower right hand corner of the rad you can see it if you can look through the bumper when your lay on the ground looking up at the car Any more ideas??

Maybe a leak from bottom hose.
 
Hi,

I'd be pretty sure it's your radiator. Is it the BMW petrol you've got or the later model with the Jag engine ?

If it's the early BMW then check the rad at the top where the horizontal tube meets the vertical side tank. They leak from the joint there (engine side) and it runs down. Slightly difficult to see with the cowl on, but you'll usually see a trace of it.

If it's the later Jag engine then more likely the rad is leaking from lower down, about a third of the way up from the bottom. Still similar place in terms of end of the tube where it meets the vertical side tank.

A fairly easy swap as the rad slots into the plastic frame, but it involves a coolant drain. Easier if you clamp the hoses so you only loose what's in the rad if possible.

Thanks for your reply, will have a look tonight, if it is the rad that needs replacing, can i do it without having to remove the grill/bumber etc.. do you have a workshop/instruction sheet, i have the RAVE but couldnt see anything about changing a radiator in there
 
Hi All

so i decided that i needed to get the drip/leak checked out, did a test my self to work out what the fluid was and it turns out it is the coolant so on the way home tonight took it in to a small independent land rover garage about 2 minutes from my house and got them to check it out. First thing he did was check the rad and sure enough just under the cooling fan cowling there was pink fluid staining the rad where it has been leaking and has dried on the core. So to cut a long story short it needs a new rad (only had the car 2 days!! well annoyed) £405 to change it with a new rad does this sound about right (includes the part and labour). Its going in tomorrow for a full coolant system pressure check before the rad change on monday, hope the check goes ok and dosent show any other problems up with the coolant system!

Personally i would stick some stop leak in first of all. It has been know to completely cure this type of leak. It sounds more of a weep that a leak. Not the ironite stuff that clogs the heater matrix, but ordinary Stop leak or Radweld, around a fiver and well worth a try.

been reading on the internet about radweld etc.. because that was my first thought but after reading a number of forum posts the majority of people were saying that it is not good for the BMW engine that in my range rover and the land rover trained garage i took it too said that it was bad for the engine, i dont want to cause any other problems, so i think i will bite the bullet and get the rad changed :( After all it is 7 years old and it more than likely got the sediment problem at the bottom of the rad which could cause problems with the transmission overheating in the future if not addressed eventually.
