When they were doing the lane "survey", what the first old guy did was completely out of order, dangerous and illegal. He stepped out and deliberately tried to stop them. It's classed as a road, what the hell did he think he was doing? It was deliberately provocative, and then he had the gall to ring the police and report the riders, who were not speeding nor riding dangerously.

I watched with interest, the complaint seems to be mostly directed at the lack of maintenance on the lanes just as in normal roads, if there is damage close the lane for immediate repares so everyone can enjoy them, im sure no one would object to this, the off roaders were prepared to do something to benefit everyone but was shot down, Im not being predjudice but they were all retired people i didnt see any young people complaining, it does seem a bit like dont they have anything better to do, What ever happened to compromine what about seperate days for vehicles and people so we wouldnt clash there seems to be no discussion about a compromise like this, its either one or the other, if the lanes are that damaged surely everyone should be banned and not just 4x4s, i bet if one of them fell and broke thier ankle the only vehicle that could reach them was a 4x4 they wouldnt be complaining so much!!

I have to disagree with this, basically those moaning about the 4x4's are just using anything they can to pin blame on to green laners and they will not be happy unless all 4x4's are banned, so even if the lanes are repaired and the hedges cut back, they will still find another excuse to try and ban us. Basically all they care about is themselves.

Also if we hadn't already lost so many lanes, then those lanes that remain would not be so highly trafficked as there would be far more lanes and the presence of the 4x4's would be more diluted across them. By closing more lanes, all it is doing is cramming more and more vehicles onto those few lanes that remain open.....

Like every bloody law that get passed, they never properly consider the knock on effect.

They cannot simply close lanes and expect it to be reet, cos then another vulnerable lane gets overused and ****ed.

It's a sorry state of affairs in a modern society with no common sense.

What gets me is that you take any man or woman and talk to them, and they're probably rather sensible/clever. However, put a few of them together, particularly in the national parks and youve got a complete lack of competance.

Take the lakes for instance. The LDNPA decided to put a 10 mph speed limit on Windermere in 2000, which was to come into effect March 2005. There was some guff about water erosion and all the noise from the boats.

Basically, wtf. We boated on that lake for 14 years and it was exactly the same the day we left as the day we first went.

There are numerous lakes in the lake district, Windermere being the largest and the one that developed **** LOADS of revenue for the councils, hundreds of thousands per annum in boat licences, launching fees, and all the money people spent up there. The place was booming, everyone happy, except the bobblies who wanted to claim the only remaining unrestricted lake for themselves.

There was lots more lakes to walk around, now there is another one but the towns around the lake are like ghost towns. No money left cos walkers eat sandwiches, waterskiers drink beer.

It's just the same old things every time - someone mentions it, once the ball is rolling it is impossible to overturn it, because no-one gives a **** about the things with engines in and they don't actually realise what a mess it will make if they keep closing recreational areas down!

Once they ban the 4x4's they'll move onto the mountain bikers. They came across as coffin dodgers with too much time on their hands.

That was exactley my thorts as i watched. They wouldnt want us band if they ever needed rescue by us. And yes if a lane is closed due to damage, it should be to every one!!!

The emphasis did seem to be towards the trail bikers and not so much the 4X4 drivers. Lots more coverage of bikes than trucks.

Although the brush with the tar on covers everyone.

Generally if the lane is too narrow or will cause an issue for passing walkers or horsey types then it's a case of stop, engine off and wait for them to pass.

A little bit of courtesy speaks volumes.

I agree with what you're saying kipper.

Even I stop/wave for the bikers, beciasr they're travelling quicker so we let them through, but they very rarely wave/smile or even nod to say thanks.

It's a difficult one to call. I was looking on the ktm forum and they were saying that it's definitely the 4x4s that cause more of a problem, with them being lane width and churning up a lot of ****.

I agree, in that sense the 4x4 is worst.

But what bothers the locals/walkers more?

The slow moving width and occasional mess from a 4x4, or the constant noise and often high speeds of the bikes?

I'm very much into the feeling that if I'm on the lane using my chosen hobby (be it foot, hoof, two wheels or four) then so should they, but I must admit I do feel a little bit, I dunno, threatened by the bikes?

It's the speed and noise that really makes them out of place in the countryside.

There's not a lot you can do about the width of a 4x4 but as stated, if you stop/pull into the bushes to allow bobblies to pass then you can't say fairer.

As was shown in the programme it was the bikers that expected the right of way, not one of them slowed down or stopped to make life easier for the ramblers or doddering old farts.

To be fair it's not the kit we drive that makes the mess it's the way we drive it that makes the difference.

Bunch of narrow minded, selfish, short sighted, old fookin ****s! They seem to have soon forgotten who it was that was towing them out of Hathersage and up Winnats Pass last year when the snow came down and all of the old fookin rambling brigade got stuck! The 2 faced fookers, I hope it snows for a month now so that I can drive past them with a merry smile on my face. I wonder how many people there are in this country enjoying our past time that hold profesional/high positions? Do these old gits think we are just a bunch of hillbillie retards?

Just managed to watch the programme from the weekend. It showed the ramblers as unreasonable and unwilling to compromise its they felt their rights were more important than others. Bikers didn't do any favours for themselves though but no real actual footage of 4x4's causing real problems. If they did go the way of banning all motor vehicles then the ramblers will change their tune. I saw this in Scotland , where I lived up till a year ago, where the ramblers turn on the mountain bikers and horse riders next. It has to be said though as I have been walking and climbing for over 16 years the ramblers are generally viewed as a pain in the ass from most outdoor sports and that includes hill walkers and mountaineers.

the thing is that we cant ignore em... they wont go away and unchallenged they will start to convert people to their way of thinking..

the 4x4 group on the show need our support, along with glass and all the other 4x4 clubs..

we shold all join together and have a voice that will be as loud as the ramblers...

how many different groups are represented on ere?

how bout a sticky to allow people to list clubs and contact points?

they they can call on each other for support on local issues or advice.....

Hear hear. Good point very well put.

i think we're all pretty passionate about our lanes. If this thing takes off i may have to give glass one final chance.

Why can't we start a forum wide plee for people to join a fairness for all group that puts the 4x4's case forward for keeping our rights. I'm sure loads a people from all the forums would support it judging by the ammount of posts on the forumswhat we cant have is people doing silly stuff and claiming to be behind the group as it would undermine the whole thing.

Unfortunately we all have to work together to sort out nuggets like this fella.

Not the fella in the green, he just gets stuck on mole hills.

This program made me so angry! Bunch of busy body tossers!

Get a new ****ing hobby. I couldn't believe when they were stepping out in front of those bikes.

Then I couldn't believe the copper who tested everyones bloody horns, tested sizes of number plates etc.. go and do some real work, ****.

As if some of the locals were literally in tears about it, what the ****.

Grr.

is it just me thinking if its for environmental reasons its shut giving it a chance to repair itself then walkers, horses and mountain bikes should be banned too?

and I'm not very biased I've got 4 horses but these people are taking the ****!

All i want to say to them is technically its a road... don't want cars and bikes getting in your way?? DON'T WALK DOWN A F*CKING ROAD!!!
