That doesn't surprise, it's like the fox hunting debate, those against it were/are those in the towns that probs haven't seen a fox, those against laning won't realise the ones that are "damaged" a lot of the time it's water run off. Yeah people going off the track n those with massive mud tires digging some up don't help, there could be voluntery restrains that us keen to keep lanes open would be happy to obide by, such as a certain trye type or closing them in say winter or part of it. Then there wouldn't be as much damage and more lanes could stay open, even if we could am sure many of us would go and repare such lanes.
