Hi all...

I've got to replace some of the bushes and ball joints underneath. And after reading through busters "how to's" I thought I would do the same and paint the components i fetched off.

So my question is, what sort of paint is that? Ideally I would like something a satin finish, that's fairly long lasting and obtainable fairly easy.
What do you guys use?

Aldi/Lidl do some good stuff. Baufix it's called; does stone chip and others. £2.99 can.

I've gotsome small tins of POR15 although this is gloss they do an overcoat for it in satin black or just let it get covered in crud from the road

I use rustoleum combi colour for for most things underneath.

I haven't been amazingly impressed with it TBH. 6 months after my rebuild and I am going to have to paint 80% of it all over again. Yes, I probably could have done a better job of prepping the stuff, but I thought rustoleum could just be painted over rust.

Yeah, wire brush wheel on an angle grinder, then wiped over it with white spirits and left to dry.

hmm.. interesting! Maybe a rust killer or high zinc primer first for the next time..
Although I think not all the rustoleum paints are direct to rust, as they have several ranges for metal work..

I'm 90% sure that the paint I used said direct to rust. The shed I did the rebuild in was pretty damp though, so it is entirely likely that some damp got under the paint.

When it is a bit warmer I am going to do the whole of the underneath again.

I used enamel paint on the chassis, and that has proved to be quite hard wearing.

i wire wheeled then used an acid deruster tank at work for my bits and bobs.....

they were sparkling when they came out and got neutralised.

hammerite still didnt like it.

Thanks for all your replies. Black Hammerite has a grey tinge to it which I wasn't keen on for the axles.

Is rustoleom totally black?

6 months on from using rustoleum:

And that was 2 coats of it.

Though as I said before, my shed was very damp.

I painted it again at the weekend, will get some more pics in a bit. Weirdly the rear axle is a lot more rusty than the front. Though I guess it has been leaking diesel over everything...

And yes, the satin black is black, no grey to it.

I'm using rustoleum combicolour but I am using their primer aswell, it all seems to cover well, hope it lasts.
