+1 Hammerite is complete ****e.

I've found priming with automotive primer (red oxide type) and then spraying with black works best. Nothing lasts that long, so once its done blast it with dinitrol as a top coat.

Before anybody mentions it, I know it isn't red lead but whatever it is it works.
 
6 months on from using rustoleum:

And that was 2 coats of it.

Though as I said before, my shed was very damp.

I painted it again at the weekend, will get some more pics in a bit. Weirdly the rear axle is a lot more rusty than the front. Though I guess it has been leaking diesel over everything...

And yes, the satin black is black, no grey to it.

Bloody hell that doesn't look good, and I'm hoping mine doesn't turn like that.
 
Isn't the problem with por15 though that the component has to be manky/rusty otherwise it won't stick? If I'm taking it off I like to wire brush it and rustconvert lol

I use zinc primer and grey undercoat on the chassis, parts of it has been on over 12 months with no evidence the rust showing its ugly head. I use the Gary because I had two gallon given.

I used rustoleum and its starting to come through on my axles too. Mine has been wrapped in a tarp all winter and never moved off the drive! My axles were initially cleaned with a needle gun, then two different shaped wire wheels, then rubbed down by hand before being treated with rust inhibitor (aquasteel) Then rustoleum was the last coat. Looked gorgeous, but doesn't now.

At least I can tell that I have fixed my leaking diff!

If I did it again I think I would use a zinc based primer, then rustoleum as it does cover very well, even if it drips a bit too easily.
 
Por15 is really a 3 part system including a degreaser, etch and then the black paint

I can vouch the black paint takes days to come off your face!
 
I've used halfrauds enamel black with their red oxide primer on my front axle and that's lasted a few trips to yarwell so far. I used to hammerite everything but its crap now so I'm looking for other solutions. Ronseals no more rust is crap aswell. I did my rock sliders and winch bumper with it and its as bad as it was before I painted it so I'd stay well clear of that
 
Anyone used Hammerite with added waxoyl under body sealant?

Quite expensive but looks easier and less messy to apply than waxoyl alone.
 
I think this thread needs more photos! It'd be nice to be able to compare a few different '3 years on' shots... Something along those lines.
