Hi everyone,

Newbie here, have just bought a P38a 4.6 HSE in Rioja Red. I'm picking it up on Saturday.

I've carried out a quick search but couldn't find anything relating to my problem, although I expect it's been posted before, I just couldn't find it!

The problem is that it's missing one of the 'blippers', I've read, on other web sites, that the ECU and security is so complex on the P38 that I can't order a replacement key as clones won't work.

Is this true? Can someone please clarify what I can and can't get by way of a new key. Also I have the figure of £160 in mind for a key from LR, does this sound about right?

You can get a replacement key but it has to be coded in, i have an invoice in my service folder for "SUPPLY AND CODE IN SPARE KEY FOB" which after vat comes to £100.93 but thats from 2002 so it may well have gone up.
 
Just had one of the original fobs die on me recently and ordered one from my local official LR dealer.

Cost £115 INC VAT....actually it was slightly less than that but I rounded up...

To order one you need to provide them 2 forms of ID and the vehicle registration document which shows the chassis number. These keys are ordered from BMW in Germany an takes about 4-5 working days.

Whilst your there, if your other fob has been hacked open with a screw driver and left the back completely knackered, you can get a new back for £1 and the replacement buttons for £0.75 pence each.
 
Call me a sceptic, but that site looks dodgy.I dont see how they can supply keys that will also de-activate the imobiliser when its put in the ignition. They appear to be using a "grabber" for the RF but the Range Rover is a bit more clever than that......

Not strictly true, just order a new key from the LR dealer when you have the new V5 and take your ID docs with you. Look on the back of the key you have already and see whether its a Key1 or Key2. Whicever it is, order the opposite, so if you have Key1, order Key2 and vice versa.

When you go into the dealer to pick it up, pay and LEAVE. DONT listen to any BS about them needing to 'code it in' for you which they tried to charge me some stupid amount to do.

Walk out to the car with your new key, stick it in the lock, undo the car and the drivers door will unlock. Next stick the key in the ignition and the key should sync up fine and at that point the rest of the doors will unlock. You can then start the car and you will be able to lock and unlock remotely now. This is the way it worked with my 1998 P38 anyway.

I wouldnt even touch those other companies. I dont like the idea of them sending you a[FONT=arial,helvetica] Radio Data Recorder to capture your keys signal then duplicate your transponder.

Official LR keys cost about £25 more, but at least I have total confidence with regards to the security of my RR and the protection of my personal information and data etc.

I also prefer the loof of the offical LR RR fobs.

When I bought my 2000 RR from the dealer there was only one key , So they order me another from the factory and sent it to me by post . When it arrived I walked to the car and pressed the buttons and it worked as it should so I can vouch for this process being correct .
