hello all , is there by any chance a lpg wizard that can help , my recently aquired p38a 4.6 hse is fitted with an lpg conversion its a single point system ( i know multi point is maybe a better option on this model ) it was converted in april 02 by rpi engineering and is a omvl system with a wheel well mounted tank, i have had a look around it and besides all the usual solenoids and other gubbins it also has a 3rd 02 sensor , but what bothers me is a multi plug under the bonnet in the lpg loom ( the other end is a smaller multi plug near the throttle housing these are not connected to anything .
unlike my lse it has a 2 position switch on the dash and will happily start and run on either petrol or lpg .
my mpg figure is around 10/11 there abouts on lpg , but the performance is a bit woolley although there is no missfireing it just seems a bit lathargic and overall underpowered its a little better on petrol but its still not what i would expect from a 4.6 donkey if anyone has this system on their rangerover or any guru`s out there can give me a couple of pointers i would be very gratefull thanks in advance.

Hi there.
I think that you need to get it running well on petrol first. From personal experience i think that i would check and clean all leads and plugs, if you can start it in the dark some where it wuill show you if the leads are breaking down by eatching for sparks tracking off the leads to the heads and bodywork. Check the air intake is secure and filter is clean, (no pigeons) then get the oxygen sensors checked to make sure they're working corectly, all three as the extra sensor is for the gas. Really i would take it to an independent lr specialist just to have any fault codes checked out. If you get it spot on on petrol, you can then tell if the gas is messing it about. Mine did and i had to have it manually mapped on gas by typing in the numbers for the gas map, but mine is sequential. Let us knopw what happens.

Cheers, Nick.

I would forget the single point system and disable it,(including removing the gas ring) till you can get a sequential front end kit fitted. This will remove the inlet restriction and let the engine breathe properly - then it will pull like a 4.6 should.
Get the Ecu's adaptions reset and check for correct oxygen sensor activity - ie,its running properly. Then you can get the engine bay kit fitted for a sequential LPG system.Just make sure its well fitted and set up,then you will realise how good it can be - done properly.

cheers nick for the quick reply , i am a hgv mechanic by trade , i had the car checked yesterday and the result was no stored or current faults , i am more concerned really with the lpg side of things , and if all the componants are fitted as original i am considering dropping it in to an lpg specialist if anyone can recommend a good one around my area bolton / manchester i dont want to go to just anyone as with everything the lpg garages have their cowboys .

Sorry,I only check and report on LPG systems,do the odd repair/tune up.The only person I trust with LPG is Gordon Finlay LPG - Trouble is he is in devon, too far for you.
Anyone else help ?

Where are you?
Mine was £1800, it's Zavoli, it was expensive, but now it's running properly it is juuuuust fab. I've had the injector timing opened up on the gas and the performance is fantastic, whilst still sending me to Aberdovey and back on under a tankfull, which is around 200 odd miles on back roads.

Cheers, nick.

hiya nick i live up in bolton lancs mate , i know my gas system cant be right as my old lpg powered lse was quicker off the mark than this one  so summat must be amiss somewhere , i have emailed rpi engineering for some info so i will see what that brings , on the bright side though i am very pleased with the car otherwise .

 hi guys funny things these lpgs i have one on my rangy 4.6 the same iv`e always had a loss of power on the gas compared to petrol over the last week though iv`e been having a lot of trouble with mine it pops back like it`s missing and the smell of gas from the exuast is really strong iv`e been to my local gas supplier as he fits gas systems he`s not really up on my system and the people who done my system are over 250 mile away from me but as said in the post iv`e been adviced to change the plugs and leads as the gas needs a reel good spark to ignite be interested on how you get on m8 and your problem;)

I've had four motors LPG'd by my local friendly LPGer. I never dreamed there was such a thing as problems with LPG. I live in Anglesey. I've just had my p38 done and the guys showed up at my house and said they wanted to change the injectors as the manufacturers weren't happy. I was delighted, as it was. Anglesey's not a bad place to spend a weekend so, if anyone wants their number, post away. There's also a local friendly stainless steel exhaust guy that'll make you one to suit your raspy, boomy, sporty, catless, silent, or whatever requirements out of proper thick stainless.....-multibranch manifolds if you want. You can then go and knock em dead on the friendly local race track. Boring living in the country by the sea, isn't it?

well guys first off thanks for all your help and the replies its much appreciated , its been doing my crust in since i bought it , i cant be doing with a motor that runs like sh*t when it should be silky smooth and have plenty of grunt to spare , its sorted now !!!!!!!! i gave it a proper dose of looking at today after being out dragged by some spotty little oink in a citreon saxo ffs :D anyway it turned out quite simple really the vac pipe to the fuel pressure regulator was split and also the breather hose had a split in it both now replaced and hell what a difference its like its got another 3 cylinders from somewhere , it goes like stink now whether on petrol or gas , tomorrow i am going to stick a new set of plugs in it just for good measure although the ones fitted look relatively new but hey what the hell for what they cost its got to be worth it :) again thanks a bunch fella`s .
