Hi guys, I have recently bought a 1996 Diesel Range Rover P38. Its fantastic and returning great MPG, but there is one annoying problem that I would like to resolve. Its quiet up to about 30mph, but from here on, there is a whining noise under acceleration that gets louder and louder the faster the car goes. It only makes the noise when the accelerator is pressed and stops immediately if the accelerator is released. It also stops momentarily if I go over a bump. Its is not affected by gear change. I have checked the universal joints on the driveshafts and all 4 joints are good, no play at all. Its very hard to pinpoint where it is comming from, but I think its from towards the rear? Any ideas?

Next little question, I am fitting a Sat Nav system and need to find the speed sensor wire. I was told I can get this from the Cruise control module AMR something, but I cant find find it anywhere! I have looked behind the glovebox and behind the dash trim under the steering wheel, but dont see it anywhere. Its got cruise control that works, so could someone give me a location and wire colour please????

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Hi bigp38.
I'd suggest you download a copy of RAVE. That has the location of all the parts and some wiring diagrams so may help you with finding the cruise control module you're after.
I think theres a link to it in one of the forums.

Hi Micko2602,
I will do a search and see if I can find it. Its a shame haynes doent do a manual for these.

Its the first 4x4 i have bought, I have had a Trans-Am up till now, so just a slight difference! :)

Alastair.

Theres a link to RAVE in the common faults and questions section. Its a handy bit of info to have and its far better than any Haynes manual

The diesel doesn't have a separate cruise control module, the function is done by the engine ECU. There would be a speed sensor wire going to this or the BECM instead.

By the way how old is your Sat Nav system that it needs a speed sensor? Don't Sat Nav tell you the speed you are going from the GPS signal?

The whine at all speeds, under acceleration, coming from the rear, sounds like differential wear, or output shaft bearings. Is yours a manual?

lanmjdun, if the speed signal comes out the computer then Im not playing with the BECM wires lol.....that sounds like it could be suicidal.....think I'll let the local car electrician do it.....he breaks it, he can fix it! Its an in dash Blaupunkt head unit, 2007 I think, picks up the signal from the VSS not like the Tom Toms.

Just been down to my girlfriends and back (hence teh 5 day delay in replying!), so a 550 mile round trip.....whining away, especially bad at 60mph. Mine is an Automatic. I was going to try changing the diff fluid for something a little thicker, any suggestions? I can tap out a tune on it by depressing the accelarator and releasing which is quite entertaining :D Is there anyway of telling if an output shaft bearing is bad, or is it a strip down and have a look job?

Also need to change the sump gasket as its got a little drip now, but otherwise no problems.......so far lol!

You are not going to get much thicker oil than is in the diff as it is; and by the time you have got at the transferbox output bearing to inspect it'll cost only a few quid more to replace.

Not that you'd be able to tell whether they are faulty from looking at them...

The diff itself is £250+vat reconned, but bear in mind there are many shafts and bearings on the P38, any one of them could be making the noise, which can travel to sound like its coming from somewhere else!
