i adjusted the steering wheel this morning and it wont 'lock' back in, the wheel tilts up n down and wont lock in postion... any ideas?

stripped it down... looks like a spring has gone, beneath s/column theres some long thin narrow plates thats s'pose to locate back into a plastic spindle and it aint springin back up... dunno how it actually works maybe a spring i cant see?.. it will locate back in manually after taking the cowling off but thats pretty **** long term
