Hi Guys.
I've been running a 300 commercial for a few years now and have decided it is time to upgrade. I would be interested in your opinions on what would be better a Diesel P38 or Disco TD5? I do a fair bit of Boat towing and long miles.
I have read many different reviews but in my experience owners are the best for advice, I'm looking around the 2000 year mark.

Many Thanks in advance.

Will.

like j the range says, yes they do have problems but the p38 does have a lot more technology on it to go wrong, which it can and does do unfortunately.but it is a fantastic car to drive when it is all working correctly.personally i would choose the p38 over the disco anyday.:)

There's no competition as far as I'm concerned. TD5 gets my vote.:)

The Rangie is a classier car, but in my opinion the 2.5 TD lump is a wee bit underpowered for a 2.5 tonne behemoth, especially with the automatic gearbox - not an ideal combination for heavy towing imo. For an every day vehicle I would go with the TD5, but for a weekend/special occasions car I would go for the Rangie (but with a V8 and LPG).

Thanks Guys.
I was thinking the TD5 Manual is probably a more practical option, but there is definitely something about a Range Rover for those long miles!

Only my experience of the two !

My dad had a 2001 P38 diesel he bought at 60k.

He had it for one year and it cost him over 2 grand in repairs !. ( dont ask me what, something to do with the transmission and one of the ECU,s ).

He, and I, found it hopelessly underpowered and very uneconomical. ( early 20,s mpg ).

My TD5 disco has not been without its problems, but, having " sampled " them both, I would stick with a TD5 !.

I have no experience of either but have been researching P38 and may well get one.

Let me know if you want to sell your 300 commercial may be interested :)

Hi.
Thanks for your reply.
I think after reading reviews and speaking to people that the Td5 is the way to go, well at least there seem to be far fewer horror stories with them.
Yes I probably will be selling the commercial, but it is is Ireland now, as I moved over here a couple of years ago. I was going to transfer it to here, but to be honest I'd rather buy a TD5 instead, shame really as it has never let me down, I reckon it is one of the "good" ones and not a Friday afternoon one!
Let me know if you are interested and we will see what we can do.
Cheers.
Will.

Had a p38 4.6 and when it worked it was a fantastic motor to drive but that was when it worked. It was the most unreliable motor I have ever had and was glad to see the back of it (1previous owner fsh).I am just about to buy a td5 less electrics to go wrong and the lad Im buying it from has a couple of p38 with eleci problems and swears he will only deal in discoverys in future as he has a lot less hassel with them.

Hi, i have a p38 at the min love it really but the problems do get to you and i dont think there will ever be a time where there isn't a little fault of some kind,

when i last had my problem I did start looking at Disco 2's but just can't give up on the p38

Reading this post isnt filling me with 2 much confidence iv just sold a tempermental impreza and bought a P38 but it seams 2 be ok its manual and doing 30 mpg
