Bit of a dilemma...

I have about £7.5 to spend on a Rangie, but do I go for L322 in average condition or a P38 in excellent condition? What are the Pros and Cons of each? Comments and thoughts welcomed please..

My opinion is dont spend it on a P38 unless you want a comfy off roader, they are fast becoming an old car, they are getting very worn out, and have lots and lots of problems, I should know, I bought mine seemingly in a very good condition, had lots of new bits, and parts, but has had endless small bits failing (I still absolutely love my car, and HAVE now fixed most problems, but in my heart I know the next problem is only round the corner) You will look at a p38 wishing you had spent a grand more on a l322.

My friend bought a 100,000 milage 2002 l322 for just under 10k roughly 2 years ago, very tidy car, in the 1 1/2 years he had NO major problems with it, the 2 problems he did have were that a lip on the brake disk had formed causing a squeek, which he just changed, and the handbrake switch moved under the handle, causing the light to stay on the dash, it took him half an hour to fix. He was probably very lucky with this car, as nothing went wrong with it, but bear in mind he spend a good few months looking at different ones till he found a sound one.

I know its hard to wait and save, because like me you probably just get excited and cant wait, but just save up 10K, you will find an absolute minter.

But a the end of the day its your money, range rovers are the best and worst car you will ever buy, I wouldnt change mine for the world, maybe only upgrade :D have fun with your new rangie ;)
 
Shop around and don't rush into it. Iv just bought a 2002 4.4 v8 with LPG and new gear box (common fault on the l322. Iv got a reciept for 4k for that!)
97k miles. Doesn't look like anyone has ever sat in the back

That's with LPG on it tho witch holds its value. People are giving away v8s cuz of the running costs.
Bloke I know well just bought a 2003 autobiog. 4.4 v8 very tidy for 8.5k!
 
Get a good P38 for less than £5K and you will have £2.5K left for fixing it LOL. Get an L322 for £7.5K and you will have no money left for fixing it, think gearbox £2K, Airstrut £360, failed radio/satnav ££££and so on.
 
Thanks all. Ideally I want a L322 V8 - I will keep looking watching fleabay, a few have gone for £8k recently!

I was just about to put the same thing...and I agree with Datatek....gor to 4-5K on a sorted P38, save the rest for repairs....

any L322 you cn get for 7.5K will be a shed IMO.
 
Jheeez... There is a lovely P38 on the Bay, £5995. Black 80k miles have a look vandpcars... Tempting very tempting :)

I'm sure it is lovely, it's still a P38 and it's getting old. Paying 5,7,10K isn't going to stop it breaking down and ****ing oil all over you garage floor - buy a mint £3-4K one and spend some dosh on a top-hat linered engine block when it goes pop. Better still buy a mint late one with a buggered engine for £2K and stick a top-hat linered engine in. It's only a matter of time before it goes pop unless the engine has had the fundamental problems fixed.
 
Next month I'll probably be flipping a coin between a L322 and a Cayenne, that's not to say I'll be letting go of my P38,as a 2.5k utility vehicle I don't think I could ask for more.

Amen! Exactly what I'm looking into after my cheapo P38 did a dirty on the drive, glued it together with Kseal and hopefully it'll last long enough to become a parts car for a new one. As I see it, put a top hat block in there and its happy days from there in!
