Thanks for the input and experience, I think its a smart move. When researching this topic, I came up with many plus positive points and ZERO negative points to put one in.

Well I have yet to hear any....

I'm looking for more performance too from mine.. a 1998 4.0 v8.. so.. options are.. exhaust.. what else.. filters, can ECU / chip be done to this one also?.. thanks in advance for any ideas / experiences shared.. Eric from West Australia..

At the risk of getting my head bitten off by sensitive posters, I was watching a ytube vid a while ago, might have been on this forum. An American tested a load of filters ranging from cheap ones to high end performance filters including K&N. He examined fuel economy, engine performance and manufacturing quality of the filters. His conclusion was that a mid priced filter out performed the expensive filters. k&n didnt do particulary well. I dont think his test vehicle was chipped thougn.

If your engine is in good condition and reliable, then go ahead and chip it and put a decent cam in. Don't bother with a 'performance' air filter, you might get an imperceptible gain, especially if the old filter was very dirty, but what you'll mostly remember is the cost and the inconvenience of cleaning. If you live in s dirty/dusty environment then k&n in particular don't seem to keep that dust out very well

As said, a K&N doesn't filter very well, so in a dusty place like WA, you'll simply be grinding your pistons to mush.

Use a decent quality paper filter, along with conventional performance mods.

+1, the K&N is a waste of money performance wise and if it's the oiled type it can knacker the MAF.
That"s exactly what i was told ,and for the price you could buy 10 paper ones..And change it every 3 months or so if you wanted :D:D..o_O

I wouldn't push that lump much, especially if you have the HP22 gearbox. If you have the HP24 then you can tweak cams and so forth but you'd have been better off starting with the 4.6.
