Hello chaps,

Longtime no forum! I know this is a stupid question, but can you guys help. I have been trying to find out specs for gearboxes.

I have established that the auto box is a 'zf4hp24'. This is common to several engines.

Does the petrol and diesel have the same gearbox? are the internals the same between both? Sorry chaps, I have been looking and reading, but it does not appear to be answered anywhere.

Hope you chaps and chapesses can help,

Cheers Uralboo

Go have a look at Ashcroft Transmissions web site you will find all you are looking for there.

The only difference (apart from bellhousing) between the petrol and diesel version of these boxes are the shift points to match the engine torque charactistics. The shift points are all in the box ECU on the P38 box which is the EH version of that '24' box.

Other than that I am not aware of any differences. The '24' box is however a slightly different beast to the '22' box.

I serviced my 2000 P38a 4.0 auto gearbox yesterday, drained about 5.5ltrs of fluid and refilled with about 4.5 despite all documentation stating it holds 9.7ltrs, have I underfilled mine?
Cheers.

Most of the difference is in the TC which doesn't drain.

I however suggest that you drive yours in all gears and recheck the level.

Am I right in saying that the only way to check the level is start the engine in P, try all settings down to 1 then back to P and remove the fill screw and fill until a trickle starts?

Cheers Andy, One other thing is I notice that my gearbox won't go into top until about 38mph, is this right as I think I'm using a lot more fuel puttering around at 30mph in 3rd?
Cheers.

This was before the service also.

Thanks for the help folks!

So I will need to change ecu and bellhousing. I was planning on doing a conversion, and the bellhousing was the bit I was interseted in!

I'll post a new thread, didn't mean to hijack.

Forgot to say yesterday that the TC is different between petrol and diesel.

Therefore I would suggest getting the whole box and ECU.

There is also the Compushift route as this will eliminate the need for the BCM; depends upon what you are trying to achieve. Perhaps more detail would be useful :)
