Hi think my rangie is F@*ked :(

Driving home from work , my power steering was really hard to turn out of car park, on the road driving it got lighter but as i came to a major junction the steering got really heavy , battery light flashed a few times then the temp gauge shot up and as i came back onto straight motorway steering got light again and engine cooled to normal , but when i reached my house i could not turn into garden to park its very heavy and smell of burning from pulley area maybe belt ? i dont know

can anyone help me ?
 
as above, don't panic! Get the belts changed! Do all the fluids at the same time as well if you don't know when it was last serviced

but when i get someone to turn the steering wheel all the pulleys and belt slow down while im looking at it and when steering wheel is not moved pulleys and belt speed back up to normal speed ,

what could cause turning the steering wheel to slow down the belt an pulleys ?
pump gone ? pulley wheel fault the belt is very tight and doesint seem loose :(

How tight? an overtightened belt puts extra strain on pulley bearings, causing wear and eventually failure and seizing. There should be about 20mm deflection each way on a correctly tensioned belt.

trust me, the belt is loose. the extra load of the steering pump makes the belt slip.

im not to well educated when it comes to engines im just goin on judgement by moving the belt with my hand, ive a serious noisey rattle coming from front aswell it sounds like its in the viscous fan ,

so defo not my steering pump failing ? maybe a new belt will fix this ?

the engine is bmw 2.5

When you tun the wheel etc it will put strain on the system. Its trying to help turn the wheels with the PAS but it isnt for whatever reason. Thats why they slow down when the wheel is turned, it cant cope as well as it normally would

Exactly, the PAS pumps fluid to the system to help turn the heavy steering hence PAS, So if the pump is starting to go it wont be functioning properly.

As these chaps have said get your belts and fluids checked or replaced. Easy peasy ;)
 
If you have a loud rattling and the belt/pulleys slow down when loaded without the engine slowing down you need to look very carefully at the crank pulley. Get underneath it's the big one at the bottom. Really you need to take the belt off and get hold of the thing and see if it wobbles, moves or rocks. The outer pulley is joined to the inner with rubber and this can split and fail causing your problem. If the securing bolt is loose then you also run the risk of the timing chain sprocket breaking it's key. I would suggest you do not run the car until someone has looked at it properly and found the cause of the noise. Crank pulleys coming off make one hell of a mess.

what is left of the rubber bonding will be gripping enough to turn stuff but the load from the power steering will put enough strain on to break that grip.This also gives the burning rubber smell. It is a very comon problem with BMW engines, and crank pulley spinning up on the crank because they have come loose is a well known shogun issue which gives exactly those symptoms.

In 22 years of working on cars I've never seen an auto tensioned poly belt loosen itself to the point it can't drive anything.

It will be the belt loose the reason its slowing when you turn the steering is because its slipping that is what the burning rubber smell is, it cant be over tight as they have an auto tensioner so it automatically keeps the belt to the correct tension, it cant do this if the belt has lost its nature and gone really slack or if a bearing in the tensioner or water pump has gone. You should carefuly check all the turning parts when the belt is off to make sure they run smooth and have no play, another possibility is a fluid or oil has got onto the belt and that is making it slip, so check for leaks whilst your in that area, get it sorted ASAP as your car will overheat big time if you are not careful.


Just seen its a Derv I dont know if they have an auto tensioner.

im going to bring it to a garage in the morning and get it looked at the noise of the rattle is turning heads when engine is reved up hope its not a major job , thanks for all the feedback ill write my reply from the garage as soon as i find out wat it is :(
 
I seriously recommend you don't drive it or even run the engine until the source of the noise has been investigated and found. If it is a delaminated or loose crank pulley you are risking some serious damage. If you have any form of breakdown or recovery try that.

+1 don't drive it ,you run the risk of damage to the engine casings as well if the pulley slips inwards.
 
If you're not a member already, join the RAC, wait 24 hours, then get it recovered to a garage if you canna do the work yourself...
 
hi, lads, quick update jeep was looked at by two mechanics and was told two different problems,

one said its my belt tensioner causing belt to slip and my viscous fan causing the rattle, awaiting price for repairs ,,

second one said its my crank shaft pulley causing belt to slow down as i turn the steering, and viscous fan giving the rattle noise .
cost €550 for parts and labour

awful burning smell coming from same area to,

dont know which one to go with for repairs :(
