I'm still trying to track down the issue with my p38 has plenty power in all forward gears but put it in reverse and it wont even get you up a small kerb stone

Not unheard of for the F clutch cylinder to fail which causes no reverse and/or intermittent, wear depending..
You might also note a lack of engine braking in 1st and 2nd gear.

whats the fluid like?

Was like a dark red
Not too bad,

Is the level in the box correct?

engine running in Neutral either use the dipstick "if fitted" .
Or take the level plug out, a stream of oil should trickle out.

I'd say about 1600rpm low range does help still same amount of revs though
The torque converter stalls just below 2K rpm, at 1600 rpm the car should be moving. It sounds like there is a mechanical fault somewhere in the transmission. Put a fuse in position 11 under the drivers seat to select transfer neutral, select reverse and see if it will rev.

What will doing this show me ?

If it revs freely in reverse with fuse 11 fitted, then the problem is not in the gearbox. If it doesn't rev freely there is a gearbox problem.
I'll have a look over the weekend and report back to you thanks for your help
