engine running in Neutral either use the dipstick "if fitted" .
Or take the level plug out, a stream of oil should trickle out.

Gearbox cold for level.
It wont rev free no it's like when you select reverse it gets restricted

On the rev counter, what revs do you get if you floor the throttle in reverse?
What happens if you select low range?
I'd say about 1600rpm low range does help still same amount of revs though

The torque converter stalls just below 2K rpm, at 1600 rpm the car should be moving. It sounds like there is a mechanical fault somewhere in the transmission. Put a fuse in position 11 under the drivers seat to select transfer neutral, select reverse and see if it will rev.
What will doing this show me ?

Assuming a mechanical problem, t will show if the problem is gearbox/transfer box or diffs.

If it revs freely in reverse with fuse 11 fitted, then the problem is not in the gearbox. If it doesn't rev freely there is a gearbox problem.
I'll have a look over the weekend and report back to you thanks for your help
