Hi Chaps, been a seriel browser for a while, and picked up lots of useful info,however the problem. fitted a new Gearbox and Torque converter to a 2001 DHSE, old box completely fooked and took out the TC with it. on start up the engine was running like a complete dog, clouds of smoke, awful diesel tappety noise. the car was fine when it went onto the ramp. Road tested car Gearbox changing up and down fine, but engine very flat and clouds of smoke.

Didn't change any ECU's just the Gearbox and TC, don't think I disturbed the Crankshaft Sensor, checked it and it seems ok, no damage. Car is running like the FIP is advanced. have tried it with the PSI box disconnected and just as bad

Could i have knocked the FIP timimg out by turning the engine over on the Crankshaft pully nut? What is the best way of resetting the FIP timing? Can I do it with the engine running or will I damage someting?

It has been know for worn chains to jump a tooth if the engine is turned in the wrong direction. If you turn it in direction of rotation then it is not possible. If anything has jumped it is more likely to be camshaft than FIP. FIP timing requires special tools including a DTI and is done static.
 
Thanks Wammers. Surprised that the engine would even run if the Camshaft had jumped a tooth. Looks like I will have to try and borrow the correct DTI and start with the basics. Well thats Saturday sorted,no Christmas shopping for me!
Is it possible to strip the whole front end of the engine down and replace pulleys and chains fairly easily or is it an engine out job?
Just thought if I am having to retime it, I might as well treat to some new parts.

I say cam because there is a lot more turning resistance with the cam than the pump. You can turn the pump sprocket by hand but not the cam sprocket. There is also a cam setting tool but that can be worked around. First thing to do is lock at TDC with locating pin and look inside oil filler to see where cam is positioned if it has moved it will be pretty obvious. See RAVE for some guidance.

PS If the pump has jumped (unlikely) it's front cover off i am afraid. The cam can be done without removing it.

Thanks again, I downloaded Rave from landroversource.com last weekend, will use it this weekend for reference, now to find a kindly soul in North Wales with a DTi for hire.

Well Saturday afternoon it is, I have managed to rope in an Engineer from the local LR specialist's with all the gauges, tools etc. hopefully the Subaru will be off hire come Monday and 'Ole Trusty' will be cuttin' a groove in the snow.

Who do people recommend Ph Jones or Rimmingtons?

There is no way I will be selling this in the near future, I'll be expecting to get some return on a new gearbox and now a FIP, not forgeting the £37,000 + worth of fuel that I've put through it during ownership LoL!

Don't you mean £9250 + of fuel, the rest went in tax to the government.
 
Yep and I didn't even give any of them my vote of confidence at an election!

Any preference's re PH Jones or Rimmingtons?
