HI my rr (M reg) head had a crack in it so i have replaced the engine with 2.5 3 series bmw (L reg). It turns over and the injector light stays on and the fuel pump isn't working...

Does the diesel distribution pump need to be changed to the rr one? Or is there something else I am over looking?

Thank you

Cheers, at least i haven't got to change the diesel inj pump. So I will get it sync'd and see how it goes thanks

If I changed the the Injector pump to rr would it till need to be re sync'd with the BECM - ECU

i got the BMW engine and just put it in the rr. changed sump/pick up pipe/ steering pump. nothing electrical, kept all wiring from rr. oh and engine mounts. Got the engine from a scrap yard..

if you put the original pump back on it should still be syncked with the original engine ecu, becm.irish will confirm or say otherwise if i have got this wrong.OI IRISH yer wanted.:D:p;)

thats what i thought, I have to borrow the pump removal tool to change the pump. if that will resolve the problem other that having to transport it to a garage. ans spend a fortune... lol

Change it over and hopefully you should be ok. However, I assume you had the battery disconnected whilst you were doing the changeover and there is always the chance that a resynch may be needed.
There are guys on here who have the Syncmate for the diesel, hopefully one of them local to yourself will pop his head over the wall.

No I taped up the Starter and alternator cables and didn't need to disconect the battery, saving the ass ache as i haven't got EKA code yet. only had car short while..

I would like to thank everone for there help. I have just joined this site after reading many post over the last few weeks. I have this RR 2.5td p38 and really enjoy the drive etc until the rad got a crack in it the it all went down hill. But trying to get it back on the road.. for many more happy days motoring around in it. I will keep you posted.. thanks again

the diesel pumps aint coded, there all plug and play so to speak. unless the pump on your replacement engine is knackered changing it wont make the thing start.

Have you got it running yet?
I am interested in your solution as I am in the process of doing exactly the same swop.
I have disconnected the battery on the RR.
I know that my replacement engine ,pump etc all work ok because I drove the complete car before removing the engine. I am hoping to have all mine fitted in this weekend - if it stops snowing!

The pump didn't fit as the casing from the BMW engine was different, so I have had the pumps referbed with the bits from the rr pump.. fitiing it again tomorrow eveing.. will let you know.......

There's something up there, I've never heard of anyone else having a physical problem with fitting the pump (loads of emotional, sorry electrical but no physical). There are guys on here with 525tds pumps on their RR's

There are two different size pumps. One has a 68mm flange , the other has a smaller flange. Look at the engine where the pump fit into, does it look like its removeable,if so, take it out and modify the hole to make it bigger to accept your pump. Some engines have a removeable support (btw check donor engine for a removeable support also)whereas others have a the support as part of the casing.

The pumps are coded to the car. If you swap pumps with the wrong code the car will not start. ( injection light on dash stays on). You can see this by systematically pluging in multiconnector of the coded pump to the loom(pump dosen't need to be in situ) and turn ignition(no need to turn over engine). The injector light will go out. Now repeatfor uncodes pump. The light will stay lit.
