I've got a 1996 dse that has just developed a gearbox problem. It isn't changing gear as smoothly as it used to, it sounds like it's too slow selecting the next gear and for a fraction of a second selects nuetral (i'm probably making it sound worse than it actually is). It's done 90,000 miles and has fsh, I've checked the atf level and it seems high, it was changed last summer. She doesn't get used very often and even then it tends to be short trips or occasionally dragging the shed (caravan). Anybody got any ideas?
 
hi,i agree with the last post,ie change fluids and filter in g/box.these parts are on fleabay for a very good price,( i bought this kit for my auto ),also check up on LUCAS atf on fleabay this is a great fluid for autos,cheers,gemsdad.:D
 
Got the oil and filter changed a couple of weeks ago and it is a lot better but it's still there, if you drive it steady now you wouldn't feel it. It's more noticable when towing the caravan. Is there anything which could need adjusting maybe? :confused:

Could be the P38 favorite, bad electrical connections, the auto transmission ECU calls the engine ECU to reduce torque when a gear change is called for, it's possible that this is not happening.
 
I was going to start a thread on this as it seemed a bit wierd but you've described exactly the problem I have with my gearbox, now off to buy a replacement filter and fluid to see if this helps.

If it is a bad connection where do we start looking to try and clean these connections.

drw,try looking for lucas atf i found it to be great in my p38 auto:D
 
Thanks for the technical explanation there.

What I mean is I don't want to get half way through and realise I haven't bought enough. So how many litres or bottles should I buy when doing changing the gearbox oil and filters.

range rover w/shop manual states,auto box refill is,4.6,v8 is 11 ltrs,4.0 v8 is,9.7 ltrs,diesel is 9.7 ltrs.:D
 
Thanks for that, that's a fair few litres to get hold of, plus what I manage to spill on the floor.

I need to get myself a decent mannual for the P38, is there one that is recommended? I had a big grey Range Rover Workshop manual for the classic that was very good, is a similar one available for the P38?
 
i bought all that amount but it all will not go in,because its a refill there is still some of the old stuff still in the g/box:D
 
yeah get rave cd 2 here

theres other landrovers there too

you will need to mount the file as its a .iso file. let me know if you dont know how to do this and i can talk you through it. you can also burn the file to cd but again if youre not sure i can help you out with it!
