If you buy a p38 you will be addicted you will love it you will hate it and love it again then find yourself looking for reason to use it more than you first think. I have owned 3 p38's all v8's. Still have my 3rd with no intentions of selling and that's including having just bought a l322. As been said the Range Rovers are hard to beat when comes to it I have tried and always came back flaws in all.
Thanks! I’m pretty set on getting a P38 now

Yes the P38 has gone out of the "10 a penny stage" and the Vogue's and DHSE's are fetching good money..

As well as the well spec'd HSE's they aren't gonna be cheap for long..

Times have passed since you could get a solid one for 1k.

And that is pretty reasonable I've seen a few changing hands for over 5k.

Just a few examples.

Buy one look after it and enjoy it..

They're only gonna climb..

MPG depends the V8 according some sources can get anyware between 15-22 depending on how you drive, and of course Petrol is cheaper than Diesel ;)
Five years and they will be worth bugger all if the politicians get their way:mad:
The diesel is quiet when cruising and flies if remapped.:p

Today is my first birthdsg with my P38, 99 4.6 HSE.
In that year I have had fixed heater o rings, coolant leak transmission leak and bottom ball joints but having done that it passed mot with no advisories.
I have done 3k miles in it over the year mostly weekend running.
It still has its wee foibles, sagging roof lining the rear, lcd display can be temperamental and not display properly, passenger side heated seat doesn't work and I need to get the air con re-gassed/checked.
I didn't get it to become a concourse vehicle, I wanted a cheap tow vehicle for towing a trailer and logs and weekend use which ig does very well.
But and it is a big but, it makes me smile evety time I am behind the wheel.

That sounds perfect, manageable fixes and a good cruising vehicle. Thanks!

Hello,

New to this group so slightly unsure on the customs.

I am thinking of buying a Range Rover P38 4.6. I dream of owning a defender but unfortunately funds don’t quite cover that! I want a Land Rover that I can just insure for 2000 miles a year and use it for generally trundling around locally (I live in rural Scottish Borders) and maybe take on some green lanes. I want to do some mods and just general tinkering at weekends. I am 21 and own a van and a VW Polo as well, but I want something challenging. Is a p38 a good option? It certainly won’t be my daily driver, just a weekend toy, my friends getting a defender for the same reasons.

Many thanks.

Even the inevitable cost of fixing the P38 brings it under what a doggy-Defender goes for. Buy the P38 and off-road in comfort. You might want to invest in Air-lockers if you have some spare cash. And keep an eye out on the Bay for a Tirfor winch and land-anchor, together with tree huggers.

Jesus what are you wishing on the lad. No disrespect but he has only just learned how to wipe his own arse. ;):D:D

Ok that’s helpful to know, thanks!

Aye what the above say, even a complete shítpile of a p38 will probably cost less than a bad defender to put right IMO.:D

And TBH I hate the crowd that come over and say oh ya Range Rover is crap because it is expensive to fix and run! pah. :D

And they usually trundle back off to their defender section talking about a new £3000 chassis coz theirs snapped in half ;) :p

The newer Defenders have plenty of problems with clutches and EGR valves among other things.
