Can anyone tell me what is wrong here,the car has stood for sometime and now only works well in 1st and Rev but refuses to change up
 
I think, from memory that 1st & reverse are selected mechanically, the remaining gears electronically.
 
I am told by a friend that he had the same problem with his mercedes and it was a module in the gearbox,anyone know if the P38 is the same system

There is no module that I'm aware of the the P38 gearbox. I take it the oil level was checked when the gearbox was cold, engine idling and after going through all the gears?
If the XYZ switch is working as indicate by the dash display and assuming there is enough oil in the box, I'd be looking at the ECU with diagnostics, the cabling and the connectors.

I will look at the ecu and wiring before going further.
