The possibility was a snapped camshaft,

Ah right, so my identifications are wrong. Mistakenly I thought the rockers were on the camshaft when I glanced a pic of the engine on Rave but now you point that out I can understand that the camshaft drives the pushrods which now explains the pistons still moving. I take it this isn't that common? Assuming it appears to just be a broken camshaft, how much do you think to sort it in parts?A camshaft from Bearmach is only £75 quid but its the extras that often add up.

I feel it’s about to get very expensive:( sorry.
No worries! What's life without the bumps! Maybe it'll be a learning experience

I've got nothing to lose at this point anyway so hopefully I can get visual of the camshaft without having to buy any special tools and then investigate the extent of the damage with borescope, leak down test etc.

Inlet manifold off no special tools needed...easy job...

As you know now you'll get loads of advice and help on here when you start the job...and no question is a stupid one we all have been there!!...

Camshaft, 16 lifters, timing case gasket, water pump gasket (you might as well take it off and have a look at it whist the timing case is on the bench), rocker cover gaskets, inlet manifold gasket and seals, timing chain, sump gasket, cam lube, bits for anything else you decide to pull off while you are at it, but that is the bare minimum.

Sump off is a must at there is likely to be some metal in there from the break.

There are other options of course but you might consider buying a kit like this https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-ERR5250K2

Thought you might be interested in an update. Impressed it ran at all. Can find any evidence of metal in sump and I'm just hoping the valves aren't damaged. Reckon I should do a leak test as is before getting a new cam?

That camshaft looks well worn when ignoring the break!
If all the valves look closed, I'd take the gamble and put a new camshaft in. Don't forget all new lifters too

Yup and at least it was a clean break.

certainly looks might be easy fix...hope all goes well with leak down test...would be great if heads dont need lifted...watched today a youtuber Samcrac sort a RR whose timing set wrongly by garage trashed one head with bent valves he only refinished one head...cant wait for the next vlog he is a Merkin with a specialist mate who has a nifty tourque wrench though not only digital but you can set the degree of tightening head bolts as well...

They all appeared level and from what I could see there were no impact marks on the pistons so I'm of the same mind to give it bash.

On the list. Along with about 20 other things. Seized oil cooler pipes had me raging...

Was watching that the other day too. Hard thing for the previous owner to find out as he seemed to look after it. I would be delighted not to have to dig any deeper than I have so heres the heads stay put. I'm supposed to prepping my mk1 golf for paint so maybe I can get back to that over the next few days
