Hi all, new owner here. I bought a 1996 2.5 diesel range rover about 4 weeks ago. I have noticed the injector/check light come on about 3 or 4 times, over the 4 weeks, with a slight loss in power for a few seconds. On thursday last week the crankshaft pulley gave up! Basically rubber had perished away. Had a new one fitted on friday and then drove home(150m on moterway)-no problem. Then saturday morning went out and the light is coming on almost every time i let of the accelarator and in turn the engine dies for a few seconds. If i drop the clutch and lift off it kicks back up until i let off again. I have searched all over the internet and have read through a few threads with the same problem but am still unsure as to what i should do. I have added half a bottle of redex which doesn't seem to have helped. My only other concern is that the cat is rattling like mad and am not sure if this could be anything to do with it??? Its also possible that the fuel may be slightly contaminated as i have filled up from a drum i had but the problem was there before just not as bad. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Also if i remove the cat and weld a piece of pipe in will this be ok?

removing the cat will be fine mate, the problem with the throttle sound like the common diesel pump failing. get the fault codes read and see what shows up.

Could it be some ****e in the diesel like crap coming through from tank or something? perhaps good clean out may fix?

unlikely to be crap in the tank, even if there was it would only go as far as the fuel filter then get trapped. mine did the same thing as yours were i would loose throttle control, i bought a rovercom system and read the faults and it showed that the pump was faulty. 600 quid later when i had fitted my pump the problem was sorted. its woth getting the codes read first before thinking the worst, it could be the throttle pot instead. good luck mate and keep us informed.

i have the same trouble with a auto dse,it seems to happen more went i let go of the revs to quickly?but what codes r people on about?had read up a bit about this and found out it could be a injector pump?

got the same problem as you,i changed the start stop valve on the pump, pig of a job, could nt get a spanner to fit,did no good thou, like you i just put abit of pressure on the cutch pedal and its kicks in,wondering if there is a switch on the pedal,or a new pump, that will be a costly bummer, good luck if you hear ne thing, let me know please.

there is a switch on the clutch pedal, the fault code mine read was fuel quantity control. definatly get your cars plugged in for a diagnostic check, hopefully your cars will be something easy and cheap.;)

Hi all, decided to have o look to see if i could spot anything. The large pipe above the pump coming from the top of the rad was covered in oiley residue and the jubilee clips were loose. cleaned the pipe out and fitted new clips and hey presto it perfect! Amazing but over the moon. well recommended try
