Hello i'm new to this forum and just bought a p38 2.5 dse:cool: and the previous owner said its chipped, The power seems good but the fuel consumption it terrible when i'm just pottering about the trip computer says 23mpg is this normal? thanks

Dont rely too much on the trip computer,there far from accurate.

Brim it with fuel and figure it out as you go and that will give a more accurate mpg but dont let the fuel get to low otherwise that'll cause more problems(well documented on here) eg. hard starting and alike and welcome to the mad house

I never trust the MPG on the trip, but I think 23mpg around town is pretty good, I get about 11-12mpg around town from my 4.0 - well when its running anyway:p

23mpg sounds about right around town but you'll always get someone who gets 45mpg knocking about and 60 on a run. As DM68 says, calculate from tank to tank but I have to say that, on both the DSE I had and the 4.6 I have now, the trip computer figures are pretty much inline with tank to tank figures. But when you're only getting around 16mpg around town, you tend not to look at it too often.:rolleyes::welcome2:

Brim to Brim I get about 25mpg around and about, a bit less in cold weather, a bit more when it's warm. That's in a dse auto with a PSI powerbox, a lot will depend on traffic conditions. Here in france there is not a lot of traffic and few runs less than 25 kilometres which obviously helps economy. For a car weighing over 2 tonnes with the aerodynamics of a barn door I reckon 23 to 25mpg is not bad, it does improve significantly on a run, I get close to 30mpg on the autoroute.

:eek::eek::eek:

The P38 has the cd, 0.38, of reasonable saloon car of its vintage. Thats still good for a 4x4 today and probably not far off what all those people carriers are pushing through the air.

I have to ask, what is the cd of 0.38.
I'm assuming its to do with aerodynamics or have i just made a c*ck of myself

Nah, no c*ck making here:p

cd is the drag coefficient. Car makers loved quoting it in the 80's. IIRC your average 3 box saloon had a cd of over 0.4.
The Audi 100 was the first to make a real go of aerodynamics and I think they got it down to 0.3. The Ford Sierra was around 0.34 and the Granada maybe 0.33. The RRC was 0.45, a Hummer H2 0.57.

For comparison, the new Subaru Forrester and new VW beetle and the last model Lexus GX all have the same cd as the P38 so a barn door it's not. The new VW Tiguan is 0.37. i can't find any non hybrid 'SUV' that really beats it.

For reference the Prius has the lowest of any car on the market at 0.25

Well another fresh wrinkle on my ar*e (an old irish saying)

So my rangie really is more aerodynamic than a barn door,an evening on here is more informative than the discovery channel.

Cheers Sean and SpudH

My TD5's reading 24.8 round town and almost 32 on the motorway. I haven't had time to try it full to empty yet but I do suspect it's a bit more frugal than the readout is pointing at. Well the needle doesn't drop as fast as I thought it would :D I had a Mitsi Challenger 2.5TD just before it and it was very fond of derv.
