Hi all,

I have a 2003 Freelander TD4 which has just had one of the valves in the engine replaced. On starting it up it is now giving the fault code P0521 Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit Range/Performance and pumping out a lot of black smoke.

Does anybody know where the engine oil pressure sensor is located and if it is the sensor that is likely to be the problem, or could it be something else?

Oil pressure switch is screwed into the engine block next to the oil cooler.
A bad connection or faulty sensor can give that code but it's a good idea to check the oil pressure with a gauge when the sensor is removed.

By valve do you mean the engine breather valve was changed?

Have you checked all the induction hoses for splits or leaks? Any escaping air will cause black smoke when driving.

Sorry, sorry, it's me going round the twist!! It was one of the pistons that was changed not a valve!!!!

Sorry it's actually sideways on and not in the block as I said. here.....

If you have just had work done on engine then any built up deposits could have been disturbed and now blocking oil pick up pipe...
 
Thanks doobreydog, we now seem to be having even more problems. Our diagnostic is showing code P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Malfunction (PRNDL Input) and although the car runs it vibrates terribly.
 
Thank you very much Chaser, very helpful - where do you find these? Do you know where the turbine sensor is?
 
Dont know about td4 but on V6 the coolant pipe runs through engine oil cooler and onto transmission oil cooler.....if one is blocked then it could affect both engine oil temp causing pressure pressure drop and raised transmission temperatures causing problems there...???? Worth a look and fairly easy to check
 
Hopefully it's not that, the turbine sensor is in the gearbox. Check the electrical multiplug connections and wiring to the gearbox that carry the voltage signals to/from that sensor and the selector and inhibitor switch.

Make sure battery voltage and earths are ok or you could get all kinds of false codes.
 
Thanks Chaser, we did have a couple of wiring issues which we sorted but we are still getting the fault codes and the smoking. We'll try a few more things in the morning.
 
In relation to the rough running and smoke, have you changed the filter in the engine breather?
If not do a forum search 'engine breather', should bring up previous posts.
