why mod it? Its perfectly good enough for laning standard if its got abs it could possibly **** all over our motors driven correctly Jai

What speciifcally are you thinking of getting?I think recovery points are the first thing, if ya get in, ya wanna get out as well!
 
Recovery points and a decent set of tyres not always the most aggressive but a tyre that suits your needs. There is alot of pointless bling out there some you can justify others you cant. It does seem everyone wants to buy their way through the mud but the honest answer nobody wants to hear is to just to get out there use what you have get stuck learn how to drive and to drive around its weakneses. Then and only then look at modifying it to suit your needs. If i jumped into an F1 car in Sillverstone would it make me Micheal Schumacher? Likewise a challenge ready 100inch special would be no good travelling the world if it has overly modified parts that cannot be repaired or replaced in the middle of nowhere with minimal tools.

for looks. your landy has spotlights - use em alot? do they aid in your off roading? whilst they have a practical purpose they are also there for visual appeal.
 
Well, TBH my landy has alot of practical things on it and have many systems in place to recieve more practical mods. Its never going to be a show motor, neither is it ever going to be a serious competitive off roader. Its built cos I wanted a camel lookalike and adopted it to my wants and needs.

As for spot lights. Do I use them alot, Er no but then, I don't use the Landy alot nowdays anyhow. When I do use them they are quite handy. For instance when you have a stuck motor way past dark somtimes midnight and you still winching them out cos somone silly has gone down a lane on thier own and now wants help they don't half help. Or when I'm laying out a trial in winter and we have only have a few courses laid out we need to keep laying out past dark to get it done for the next day. Or when pitching tents they can move about to put light where I need it like in Salisbury trip last year and camping at trials events. Spotlights for me are there for a purpose they have no bling factor. Thats why I buy cheap ones £10 pound ones because they Are going to get damaged because of how vunrable they are.

My 90,

I wanted a vehicle that I can jump into and take me to France possibly Czech Republic and back without no trouble. A standard Land Rover is more than capable of this as is a morris minor. I also wanted a motor I can trial, take offroad and do some pretty serious recovery work with. Hence the rear difflock and tyre size. I have not increased articulation. In actual fact I have reduced its articulation from standard because I personally have no need for it. Notice the tyre pattern is military Xl pattern and not aggressive like a serious offroad tyre. You cannot achieve a vehicle that is going to tick all the boxes so compromise is needed. It has various systems onboard that will when I get around to it, make it a very good vehicle to travel in aswell as being not too bad when the **** hits the fan.

I am happy with my 90 overall it is mine I do not owe anyone for it and its a working project that will get completed one day.

I think I have more than proved its recovery potential, of recent months we have helped many people out of quite bad situations.

I think I have proved in recent years that the 90 can fair quite well when the going gets tough.

Now its just a case of getting it to a standard and keeping it in a condition suitable for travelling in. This is where the more serious stuff stops and the 90 stays cleaner and or involves much much more maintainance to keep everything in shape.

I would also like to think that ever since was allowed to drive around 13 years ago, I have gained enough driving skill through practical experience, taking part in competitive trials, getting involved as a kid and helping out in the workshop to know what I can and can't gat away with offroad. Not to be said I am a fantastic driver I am not. Go and watch a RTV trials event with an experienced driver of many years in a series IIa then you will see an expert at work. No power, no steering lock and no power steering. I bet he will get tha motor places most people dream of getting their kitted up disco or Rangerover. I do however know my 90 and it limitations. My 90 is not by any means perfect but I am confident in the 90 and the kit I carry, its slowly geting to be exactly what I wanted at the outset and it makes me smile when I look at it. Jai
 
There are people out there that could also say my winch is for asthetic appeal but then again mabe not if they saw how often it gets used at events and somtimes late nights rescuing people and myself I'm sure they would realise its more of a working vehicle. Jai
 
and there are pros and cons to everything.If its that good why aint it LR standard?My steering guard is battered, so it works but it has also reduced me clearance at the front.Swings and roundabouts.
 
Everything is a compromise. weight penalty is also high with lots of protection. but it protects your steering/fuel tank/whatever so pro's and cons like goonarmy said
 
yea see thats how i see it. a modification is for both a practical and aesthetic reason. i will be getting a steering guard - dont want that hassle again. it does its job but its also visually appealing
 
Just saying that a RR classic or P38 although not that good by some peoples standards You will quite often hear at Pay and play sites, or even greenlane outings It needs a 2 inch lift, dislocation cones, longer shocks, steel bumpers, etc etc If they were driven to their capabilities they are bloody good standard Jai
 
Carpy you saw them kitted up challenge 90's at Whaddon not a clue how to drive between them. One was in High range quite blatently as he stalled it in reverse. The other waited until he got stuck and then decided he needed 12000RPM from his 200tdi to get himself out. They eventually gave up and watched us lot bugger about there. If you can drive slowly and make it look easy, it don't half **** off these people.

What was their motors worth?

Simex tyres,
Full external cages (actually not to MSA specs),
Superwinch front and rears,
Wheel spacers,
Mach5 rims,
Difflocks,
Safari snorkel,
X-lights (spotlamps),
Bucket seats,
Harnesses,

No doubt expensive everything else they must have been about 8K to build if not much more each. Not a single idea between them but It don't half look fancy. Jai

Was thinking recovery points first. Need the tow kit first as i need to move a horse. So will look into recovery points at the same time.

After that, it'll be side bars or side-steps, just incase my judgement isnt good and i side-swipe a tree.

I was thinking of getting a steering guard, (maybe Disco2 or RRC would fit, maybe diff guards as well) and POSSIBLY changing the front bumper and putting on an off road/winch bumper.

Also possibly thinking about getting a snorkel for a nissan patrol and modifying it, just incase i do get wet.

Was going to change my Pirelli STR's to AT2's, just for a bit of better off-road traction.

That was about all I want to do i think.

jai i totally agree with you, goes for other past times as well. the fishing slogan is all the gear no idea, and it obviously goes for off roading as well. i just think a modded landy is a more eye catching item, and certainly better looking if it isnt over the top. i for one cannot wait to get a light bar and mount the spotlights, and get the steering guard!
 
Well hey folks what an interesting little debate we have going on here.

I have to say that since being rescued by Jai on a number of occasions... after dark so using those "unnecessary" spots, VERY stuck so using the occasional winch, everything about that motor is practical. No question. If I were going somewhere and worried about being stuck, I would put Jai's motor alongside any motor in the Herts group.

Not too sure about the water sealing properties on the doors and floor though.
