Hello,

I was on my home from work tonight and about 3 minutes into the journey, the temperature gauge was just over half way.

Then I hit traffic, and it quickly went into the red followed by a complete loss of power (when I accelerated it went no where), so I pulled over and let the vehicle cool down for 15 minutes.

I then put topped up the coolant (about 1 Litre) checked the engine oil which looked ok, it was very black and thin but no creamy white residue.

The oil was well above the high level, but I was on an incline, when I checked the oil last week it was in the middle.

Drove home and the gauge remand in the middle or below.

Anyone know what my fault might be?

By the way itÂ’s a Range Rover 2.5 Diesel (BMW) DSE auto 1996.

Many thanks

Bob

Hi, I had exactly the same thing happen last week so have a look at the thread below as it might give you some ideas.

Also my oil was very low and the water was down after topping these up didn't overheat when I did the same route home where it overheated the last time, i.e a 5 mile run and then hit traffic.

Although the water level seems to drop quite quickly so I might have a leak from somewhere. I'm going to replace the expansion tank lid in case that's letting pressure out.

Thank you DR,

I checked the coolant level this morning and put another Litre of coolant in, also checked the oil which was at the max level.

Went to work and back again which is a 40 mile round trip, and the temp gauge did not go over half way.

Still none the wiser?

I flushed my radiator during the service and that has helped to lower the average temp.
