Hi,

I have a 300tdi Discovery.

A few weeks back I had overheating problems. The gauge was going in to the red, and the only way to get it down was to turn the heaters on full. I replaced the thermostat (and housing) and that fixed the problem - or so i thought.

A couple of days ago I was driving down the motorway doing about 65, and I heard a hissing noise. I pulled over and the bottom of the header tank had split and I lost all water. The temperature gauge did not go over half way at any point. I replaced the header tank, and the coolant.

A day or so goes by and i checked the header tank - it was almost empty, so I filled it back up.

Today after a motorway drive I got home and thought i'd check the level in the header tank, again the temp gauge barely went over half way. I let the car sit for about 15 minutes before carefully undoing the cap with a big rag. As soon as it released a tiny bit of pressure all over the coolant came boiling out of the tank (cap still on) and it emptied itself.

Rad is getting hot all over, heaters work.

Thoughts, please?

Sounds like you might have pressure getting into the water from the engine, could be a head gasket leak into a waterway...or crack in head / block ... :(

Have a 'sniff test' done on the water in the expansion tank...

Sounds to me like it's the head gasket that's gone !:mad:
Top off , skim head , & drop a bottle of K seal in system ! I know not all folks like K seal but my P gasket WAS weeping & K seal has cured it !:rolleyes::):):p

I was thinking it could be the head gasket, was hoping it might happen to be something a bit easier haha.

Thanks guys - I understand they're pretty straight forward on a 300tdi, might give it a go myself. My Dad is a mechanic so I can always invite him round for a hand :D

Their as easy as a walk in the park !:rolleyes: Now't to difficult :eek: LOL
I would put a 3 hole gasket on after a head skim depending were it's blown ! And wot you find when you have the head off !:rolleyes::mad:

Hi Steve,

Does the number of holes indicate the thickness of the gasket?

I'm sure I'll find plenty of other horrors when I start to take it apart, haha.

Yes the three hole is the thickest gasket you can get !:eek: Unless some 1 knows different !:rolleyes::p
Don't think you'l find any horrors when you get it apart :rolleyes::oops::eek::mad: LOL But I would have the head skimmed just to be on the safe side !:rolleyes:

I was going to post the same but a quick search throws up conflicting info :confused:

Many, normally reliable sources don't mention no hole gaskets.

From what I can find:
ERR7154 see here (but don't use a BP one!!)
