was after some advice really ,is it worth fitting a overdrive to my series 3 petrol ,do thay save on fuel or is it the noise factor? thanks

I think an overdrive is one of the best series mods to be honest!
Noise difference is great! and saves fuel!! And my series will now do 70 in the flat!! (that is flat out! not bad for diesel!)
Cheers

You have to be carfull to get a good one lots of people neglected them letting them run low on oil they then become very noisy, and then people say theyu are cr#p cos they did not look after them, mine has done 180.000mls and is still going strong had it from new over 30 years.

Nick.

Yep, ah wudnae be without mine either. I cringe thinking back to pre overdrive and 205R16's! Sloooooow.

Yup they're a right boon. However, if you're running huge tyres you may see little improvement as you'll have insufficient power to shift it. On 205/80R16s I wouldn't be without it but when I've got my 7.50R16s fitted I only really engage it on long runs at speeds above 50 on the flat; it still makes a poditive difference though. Get a good one and you wont regret it.

Add a teaspoonful of moly powder to the oil in the O/D.
Shuts it up, reduces drag, and makes it last forever.

Moly powder whats that and were would you get it.

Nick.

Right nick, it is a very fine almost black powder that looks and behaves like toner from a photocopier. Messy ...

Molybdenum di-sulphide MoS2

If the grade is right, the very finest grade, it is a fantastic lubricant, I think rated as THE best lube of all time, metal to metal.

In a gearbox it "plates" the moving parts and prevents metal meeting metal.

Good plan that.

Ideal in the O/D as it has its own oil. So you drain it, and put the right amount of oil in a can, add a tsp of moly powder, watch it slowly get absorbed by the oil, and toss the lot into the O/D.

Then forget all about it. You'll get used to the extra quiet, but if you miss the whine get a mate to tape his and play it loudly in your 8-track tape when you drive.

Try looking on the net for it.
Rifle shooters buy it for putting on bullets.

You only need as little, and you want the finest grade possible, by "finest" meaning smallest particle sizes.

News Discovered this morning

I spoke to Craddocks this morning about an advert I spotted stating they have Fairey Overdrive parts. Apparently they have some, but they hope to get more. When Fairey were sold by Superwinch their equipment was sold to a US firm. This was a few years back. Apparently the US firm just happen to reside in New Orleans. The hurricane decimated the area and theyt have had no parts from them since, although Craddocks understand that there is still an intention to resume supply, they just don't know when!

Good news, in a kinda warped way.... ;)
